Richmond students take national stage—at home
As Richmond prepares to host one of the largest academic competitions in the country this summer, 16 students from across the region have already secured their place in the spotlight.
The National Speech & Debate Tournament will bring thousands of students, coaches, and families to the city from June 14–19. But before the national field arrives, local competitors have emerged as standout voices—earning qualification through months of competition, research, and performance.
Representing a mix of public and independent schools, these students will compete in events ranging from policy debate to original oratory, showcasing both analytical rigor and creative expression.

A home-field moment for Richmond
Hosting the national tournament marks a significant moment for Richmond, placing the city at the center of a competition that emphasizes civic engagement, critical thinking, and public speaking.
For local students, the opportunity carries added weight: competing on a national stage in their own city, in front of peers and visitors from across the country.
How the community can show up
Organizers are calling on Richmond residents to help welcome an estimated 10,000 visitors during tournament week. Volunteer roles include hospitality support, wayfinding, and staffing information desks across key venues, including the Greater Richmond Convention Center, Altria Theater, and local schools.
In advance of the tournament, a public screening of the documentary SPEAK. on May 3 will offer a preview of the activity and its impact, featuring a talk-back with students and coaches.
