Then and Now The Current — April 27, 1927: Birth of Coretta Scott King

On April 27, 1927, Coretta Scott King was born in Marion, Alabama. A central figure in the Civil Rights Movement, she was not only the wife of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. but also a powerful activist in her own right. After her husband’s assassination, she expanded her work into global human rights advocacy, anti-apartheid efforts, and the fight for economic justice.

Her influence extended deeply into Virginia, particularly as the state became a battleground for civil rights litigation and school desegregation following Brown v. Board of Education. Through her leadership of the King Center and her advocacy for the federal holiday honoring Dr. King, she helped institutionalize the movement’s legacy nationwide, including in Richmond and across the Commonwealth.

Today, Coretta Scott King’s legacy endures in ongoing struggles for justice and equality. Her life represents the often underrecognized leadership of Black women in shaping modern American democracy.
