Chesterfield Opens First Hybrid Baseball and Softball Fields at Rockwood Park

Chesterfield County officials and community members gathered at Rockwood Park to celebrate the reopening of seven newly renovated baseball and softball fields, marking the county’s first installation of hybrid diamond fields.

The upgrades include turf infields paired with natural grass outfields, along with new fencing and backstops. County leaders say the hybrid design will significantly improve drainage and reduce downtime after rain, allowing for more consistent play and fewer game cancellations.

Rockwood Park, a 171-acre facility that marked its 50th anniversary last summer, is now the first park in Chesterfield to feature hybrid fields. The improvements are part of broader enhancements aimed at modernizing recreational infrastructure across the county.

While the fields will continue to serve local youth and community leagues, officials also see the upgrades as a step toward expanding Chesterfield’s sports tourism footprint. The county plans to host weekend baseball and softball tournaments at the site, bringing in regional visitors and increasing park utilization.

A similar renovation is already planned for the baseball and softball fields at Horner Park, signaling continued investment in athletic facilities.

County leaders emphasized that the project supports both everyday community use and long-term economic development through sports-based travel.
