VMFA Visual Arts Fellowship Applications Open as Deadline Approaches

Virginia artists looking for financial support to advance their work have an opportunity through the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, which is accepting applications for its Visual Arts Fellowship program. In an October 18 announcement, the Richmond museum reminded prospective applicants that the application window closes in approximately three weeks.

The fellowships support artists at different stages of their careers, including professional artists and students. For artists in RVA, the program offers a chance to secure funding for creative work without having to leave the region to find institutional support.

Established in 1940 through a gift from John Lee Pratt of Fredericksburg, the fellowship program has become a longstanding source of assistance for Virginia’s visual arts community. According to VMFA, it has distributed nearly $6 million to approximately 1,500 artists over its history.

Unlike grants tied to a specific exhibition or commission, VMFA fellowships allow recipients flexibility in how they use the money to support their artistic careers. That can include investing in equipment and studio space, continuing an education or making time to develop new work.

Recipients are selected through a competitive review process involving artists, curators and art historians. The museum offers awards to professional artists as well as eligible undergraduate and graduate students, including graduate students studying art history. Applicants should review the current eligibility rules and application instructions before submitting materials.

The program has an established connection to RVA’s arts community. Richmond-based artists have appeared among previous recipients in fields including painting, sculpture, photography and emerging media. The 2024–25 fellowship recipients included several Richmond artists, demonstrating the range of practices supported by the museum.

For emerging artists, particularly those balancing creative work with school or employment, financial support can provide room to develop a portfolio or pursue projects that might otherwise be delayed. Established artists may use an award to strengthen a practice they have spent years building.

VMFA’s October 18 reminder places the approaching deadline in early November. Applicants should confirm the exact closing date, current award amounts and required work samples through the museum’s official application information rather than relying on previous years’ guidelines.

Eligibility requirements, application instructions and fellowship contact information are available through the VMFA Visual Arts Fellowship information page. Questions may be directed to the fellowship office at vmfafellowships@vmfa.museum.
