Virginia State University will get a national spotlight during Homecoming this fall when ESPN’s First Take broadcasts live from the university’s campus on Friday, Oct. 9.
The appearance is part of the sports network’s HBCU Tour and will bring ESPN commentator and executive producer Stephen A. Smith and host Shae Cornette to VSU for the nationally televised morning program.
The broadcast, scheduled to air from 10 a.m. to noon ET, arrives during one of the university’s busiest and most visible weeks of the year, as alumni, students, faculty, staff and supporters gather for Homecoming.
For VSU, the broadcast provides an opportunity to put the university’s history, campus culture and broader impact before a national audience. Founded in 1882, Virginia State is one of the nation’s historically Black colleges and universities and has played a significant role in higher education in Virginia for more than 140 years.
ESPN’s First Take HBCU Tour has visited HBCU campuses and major events since 2019, using the program’s national platform to highlight the traditions and communities surrounding historically Black institutions.
The Oct. 9 appearance will place VSU within that national conversation while Homecoming offers a particularly visible backdrop — bringing generations of Trojans together on campus for a celebration of the university and its legacy.
VSU has not yet announced the exact location of the live broadcast or details for those interested in attending. The university said additional information will be released in the coming weeks.
