Virginia Union University has officially welcomed home one of its most celebrated basketball figures, naming A.J. English as the new head coach of the Panthers men’s basketball program.
The announcement, made during a press conference on campus April 17, marks a full-circle moment for English, whose legacy at VUU remains one of the most accomplished in program history. Now, he returns not only as a former standout and NBA veteran, but as a leader tasked with shaping the program’s next chapter.
“This is about giving back,” English said during his introduction, emphasizing the role the university played in his development. His remarks centered less on immediate wins and more on building a sustainable culture grounded in discipline, accountability, and long-term success for student-athletes.
English’s collegiate career at VUU from 1986 to 1990 set a high bar. He scored 2,396 career points and recorded a single-season school record of 1,001 points during the 1989–90 season. That same year, he earned CIAA Player of the Year and NCAA Division II National Player of the Year honors under legendary coach Dave Robbins.
Following college, English was selected in the 1990 NBA Draft by the Washington Bullets and later spent time with the Portland Trail Blazers, bringing professional experience that university leadership says will be key in mentoring today’s players.
VUU officials framed the hire as a strategic move rooted in both legacy and leadership. English’s deep connection to the university, they noted, aligns with a broader vision of developing student-athletes not only on the court, but in the classroom and community.
As he steps into the role, English made clear his priorities extend beyond basketball performance. His focus: building men first, fostering discipline, and restoring a championship culture reflective of VUU’s storied past.
