Dominion Energy Riverrock Returns to Richmond’s Riverfront With a Weekend of Music, Adventure, and Community

Dominion Energy Riverrock returns to Richmond this weekend, bringing thousands of athletes, spectators, musicians, and outdoor enthusiasts back to Brown’s Island and the James River for one of the city’s largest annual festivals.

Running across multiple days along the downtown riverfront, Riverrock combines outdoor adventure sports with concerts, fitness competitions, food vendors, family-friendly activities, and community events that transform the area into a citywide gathering space. While the festival is nationally known for kayaking, mountain biking, trail running, and climbing competitions, Riverrock has steadily evolved into a broader cultural experience that reflects Richmond’s growing identity as an outdoor and riverfront destination.

This year’s schedule includes fan-favorite events like the Subaru Ultimate Air Dogs competition, freestyle kayaking demonstrations, bouldering showcases, and bike races that bring professional and amateur athletes into the center of downtown Richmond. Fitness events and participatory races also give attendees opportunities to move beyond spectating and directly engage with the festival atmosphere.

Music remains one of the festival’s biggest attractions. Performances throughout the weekend on Brown’s Island feature a mix of Richmond artists, regional acts, jam bands, indie performers, and nationally touring musicians. Evening concerts help shift the energy of the festival from daytime competition into a social riverfront experience, with crowds gathering along the skyline as the sun sets over the James.

The festival also continues to emphasize accessibility and community participation through hands-on experiences and outdoor recreation zones designed for families and first-time attendees. Visitors can explore climbing walls, slacklines, paddling activities, and interactive outdoor demonstrations throughout the weekend, reinforcing Riverrock’s role as both an entertainment event and an introduction to Richmond’s outdoor culture.

For local businesses, food vendors, and artists, Riverrock creates one of the busiest weekends of the spring season. Restaurants, hotels, breweries, and shops throughout downtown Richmond often see increased traffic as visitors travel into the city for the event. The festival’s footprint around Brown’s Island and the riverfront also highlights how the James River has become central to Richmond’s tourism identity and public image.

More than a sports competition, Riverrock has become a reflection of how Richmond uses public space to bring together recreation, music, business, and community. As crowds once again gather along the riverfront this weekend, the festival continues to showcase not only outdoor adventure, but the culture and energy that define the city itself.
