Willie Mays was born on May 6, 1931, in Westfield, Alabama. Over the next two decades he became one of the most celebrated athletes in American history and one of the defining Black sports figures of the twentieth century. Before joining Major League Baseball, Mays played for the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro American League while still a teenager.
