The Panthers captured the 2026 men’s outdoor championship at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association meet — the program’s first conference title since 1934 — ending a 92-year drought and marking a defining moment for Virginia Union track and field.
Virginia Union finished with 150.5 points, separating itself from a competitive field that included Johnson C. Smith and Virginia State. The result reflects a program that has steadily rebuilt into a conference contender — and now, a champion.
“This is the kind of win that resets expectations,” (add coach quote if available). “It connects this group to generations of athletes who came before them.”
The title run was driven by performances across the board. Zachary Jones anchored the field events, earning Field Athlete of the Year and Championship Field MVP honors while scoring in multiple throwing disciplines. Jeremiah Palacious added a long jump title, while Antonio Smith (110-meter hurdles) and Barrian Authurs (400-meter hurdles) led on the track.
Rather than a single-event surge, Virginia Union’s championship came from depth — a balanced showing across sprints, hurdles, jumps, and throws that produced points throughout the meet.
The significance of the win extends beyond the numbers. Virginia Union had not claimed an outdoor track title since the early 20th century, making this championship a bridge between eras — and a signal of the program’s return to prominence within HBCU athletics.
That momentum now carries forward.
Several Panthers have qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships, scheduled for May 21–23, 2026, giving Virginia Union an opportunity to translate its conference success onto the national stage.
The shift is notable: from chasing a long-awaited conference title to competing among the top athletes in Division II.
For Virginia Union, the championship is both a culmination and a starting point — a historic breakthrough that reestablishes the program’s legacy, while opening the door to what comes next.
