Building the Future: Chesterfield Celebrates Major Construction Milestone for West Ridge High School

High-energy community spirit and forward-thinking design took center stage on June 16, 2026, as Chesterfield County celebrated the official “topping-out” ceremony for the new West Ridge High School. Marking the placement of the final structural steel beam, this milestone represents a monumental leap forward in the county’s commitment to sustainable growth, modern educational infrastructure, and vibrant community-building.

Set to open its doors to students in August 2027 for the 2027–2028 academic year, West Ridge High School is the county’s first new high school in over two decades. Located on Duval Road in the Matoaca District, the state-of-the-art campus is designed to comfortably accommodate 2,400 students, directly addressing the region’s rapid population growth and significantly easing student capacity across the district.

A Blueprint for 21st-Century Learning

The $196 million project, funded through the overwhelmingly approved 2022 school bond referendum, is a masterclass in modern school architecture. Far from a traditional brick-and-mortar institution, the 340,000-square-foot facility is designed to stimulate creativity, collaboration, and environmental stewardship.

Key features of the campus include:

  • Adaptable Learning Environments: Flexible, light-filled classrooms that pivot easily from lectures to group project spaces.
  • Creative and STEM Hubs: Specialized labs tailored for hands-on scientific discovery, career and technical education, and the fine arts.
  • Eco-Conscious Infrastructure: Advanced, energy-efficient systems and sustainable building materials that reduce the school’s carbon footprint.
  • Premier Athletic Facilities: A 3,500-seat stadium, double gymnasiums, and dedicated outdoor sports complexes designed to foster teamwork and school spirit.

Beyond these cutting-edge features, the school represents a major systemic victory: it is a primary catalyst in the county’s broader initiative to completely eliminate temporary classroom trailers by 2029.

Community at the Core

From its inception, West Ridge High School has been shaped by the voices of those who will fill its halls. The planning process prioritized extensive community input, ensuring the space meets the needs of educators, parents, and local organizations alike.

“A school of this caliber does more than teach—it inspires,” said Chesterfield County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. John Murray during the ceremony. “West Ridge is designed to be the heart of this community. It’s a space where future innovators, artists, and leaders will find their passions and build their futures in an environment that fully supports their potential.”

Local resident and mother of two future West Ridge students, [Sarah Jenkins], shared her enthusiasm for the neighborhood’s bright future. “Watching this building rise has been incredibly exciting for our family. It’s more than just a new building down the road; it feels like the county is truly investing in our kids’ dreams and creating a place where our entire community can gather, cheer, and connect.”

Looking Ahead to August 2027

As construction enters its final phases, the excitement in Chesterfield continues to build. The coming months will offer local residents unique opportunities to participate in shaping the school’s identity, including community forums to select the official school mascot, establish inaugural traditions, and define the cultural values of the West Ridge community.

With its doors scheduled to open in August 2027, West Ridge High School is well on its way to becoming a crowning achievement for Chesterfield County—a shining beacon of sustainable progress, educational excellence, and shared community pride.
