I-85 Southbound Traffic to Be Detoured Near Roanoke River Bridge for Repairs

Motorists traveling south on Interstate 85 near the Virginia-North Carolina border should prepare for an overnight detour later this month as the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) conducts repairs near the Roanoke River Bridge.

According to VDOT, all southbound I-85 traffic will be redirected to Route 58 westbound at Exit 12, near South Hill and Chase City, for one night between Tuesday, October 27, and Thursday, October 29. The closure will take place from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., with the specific night dependent on weather and construction conditions.

The work will address pavement markings and repairs to the median along the southbound lanes near the Roanoke River Bridge.

Detour Routes

Southbound I-85 motorists will be directed to take Exit 12 onto Route 58 westbound. Drivers should then follow Route 1 southbound into North Carolina before returning to I-85 southbound at Exit 233.

The entrance ramp from Route 903 to I-85 southbound at Exit 4 will also close temporarily during the same overnight period. Drivers using that ramp should follow the posted detour northbound on I-85 to Exit 12 before returning southbound.

VDOT advises motorists to follow posted detour signs and allow additional travel time while the closures are in effect.

The repairs are scheduled for a single night, although the department has established a three-day window to accommodate possible weather delays. VDOT will provide updates if the construction schedule changes.

Motorists can check current road conditions and traffic alerts through 511 Virginia or by calling 511 within Virginia.

To report hazardous road conditions or obtain additional information, contact VDOT’s 24-hour Customer Service Center at 800-367-7623 or visit my.vdot.virginia.gov.
