Virginia Commonwealth University erased a 19-point deficit and defeated North Carolina 82–78 in overtime, completing a dramatic comeback that turned a controlled game into a late collapse for the Tar Heels.
North Carolina dictated much of the night, leading for roughly 78 percent of game time and building a sizable advantage behind interior efficiency and rebounding. The Tar Heels finished with a 44–38 edge on the glass, with H. Veesaar leading the way with 26 points and 10 rebounds, consistently establishing position in the paint.
For long stretches, it looked like North Carolina had full command.
But VCU steadily shifted the game’s momentum in the second half.
The Rams leaned into perimeter shooting and increased defensive pressure, gradually chipping away at the deficit. That shift disrupted North Carolina’s offensive rhythm and forced more difficult possessions late in regulation.
Guard T. Hill Jr. emerged as the central figure in the comeback. He scored 31 points on 12-of-22 shooting, delivering timely baskets as VCU closed the gap. His ability to create offense in high-pressure moments gave the Rams stability as the margin narrowed.
The turning point came in the closing minutes of regulation. VCU’s defense tightened, limiting clean looks and second-chance opportunities. North Carolina, which had controlled the pace earlier, struggled to execute down the stretch. Missed shots and stalled possessions opened the door for VCU to complete the comeback and force overtime.
Once in the extra period, the momentum had fully flipped.
VCU played with composure on both ends, executing efficiently while maintaining defensive discipline. North Carolina’s offense, by contrast, continued to stall, unable to regain the rhythm that defined its early lead.
Perimeter shooting proved to be a decisive factor. VCU shot 40 percent from three-point range (10-of-25), compared to North Carolina’s 28 percent (8-of-29). That efficiency became increasingly important as the Rams mounted their second-half run and carried that momentum into overtime.
The 82–78 result stands as a defining performance for VCU—not just because of the opponent, but because of the resilience required to overturn a 19-point deficit against a program of North Carolina’s caliber.
For North Carolina, the loss highlights late-game execution issues. Despite controlling most of the game, the Tar Heels were unable to close, with offensive stagnation and missed opportunities proving costly.
For VCU, the takeaway is more forward-looking. The Rams demonstrated the ability to adjust mid-game, sustain defensive pressure, and rely on shot-making when possessions tighten—traits that often determine outcomes in high-stakes matchups.
On this night, those traits turned a deficit into a statement win.
