Please visit us during those hours or call 804-447-8189. \nSeating: We assign seats in order of when you purchase your tickets. Saxophonist Paul Taylor’s anticipated new recording and Shanachie debut\, It’s A Brand New Day\, is his thirteenth recording as a leader. The charming and down-to-earth saxman reveals\, “This album in some ways signifies a new cycle for me\, as this is my first new recording in three years. The title speaks to my desire to give my fans an optimistic outlook as we approach every brand new day.” The chart-topping saxophonist has enjoyed an enviable career with a string of Billboard #1 hits and collaborations with a genre-crossing lists of musicians including Regina Belle\, Maxi Priest\, Peabo Bryson\, Keiko Matsui. The Rippingtons\, Peter White\, Euge Groove\, Michael Lington\, Jamie Jones and Marion Meadows. Taylor confesses\, “I simply love creating and making my own music. I am the happiest when I am doing just this. It never gets old.” Danny Weiss\, VP of Shanchie’s Jazz A&R\, states\, “I’ve been an admirer of Paul’s brilliant work dating back to his very first recordings. His superb tone and phrasing are second to none. Paul Taylor is a true icon whose status is well deserved.” \n“I am an optimist in every way. Each new year\, I just keep trying to do my best\, which means playing my horn\, staying in shape\, touring\, and continuing to create\,” shares Paul Taylor\, who is an avid golfer. He scores an ace on It’s A Brand New Day\, showcasing ten tracks of nine originals and one Billie Eilish cover\, inspired by a character from one of her favorite movie’s Spirited Away. Taylor’s saxophones conjure a mesmerizing recreation of Eilish’s ethereal vocals. He shares\, “I heard this single over the speakers in a store and was like ‘Wow this is pretty cool.” When I heard it again\, I knew I had to record my own version on soprano. When I got together with Dino\, we put our own spin on it\, and I think we paid a beautiful homage to the song. Who knows maybe Billie will hear it and like it!” The feel-good track “Makin’ Moves\,” (another Esposito collaboration) features Paul’s fluid and melodic sax juxtaposed against the swinging and driving rhythm section. The hypnotic melody lingers long after the track fades away. The R&B infused and sultry “Where I Want To Be” shines a spotlight on Paul Taylor’s gorgeous tone which is amplified by layered effects. The rhythmic breakdown and soulful groove create the perfect place to be. The buoyant “Inner Circle” is a head-nodding jam while “What You Do For Me\,” is a funky dance groove with Paul Taylor’s sax out front set against a funky and gritty rhythm section. It’s A Brand New Day comes to a fitting finale with the sweet\, reflective\, and tender “Downtime.” Taylor reflects\, “Music is like the wallpaper of our lives. There are songs from certain periods of our lives that stay with us. I hope my fans can grab onto some songs on the album that will stay with them and remind them of good times. \nPaul Taylor grew up in Denver\, where he took up the saxophone at the age of seven. He played in school bands\, and in high school joined a Top 40 band called Mixed Company. Jazz keyboardist Keiko Matsui and her husband\, producer Kazu Matsui\, discovered him playing at the Catalina Island Jazz Festival and hired him to play in their band. He spent two years with them\, and then Kazu Matsui produced his 1995 debut album\, On the Horn\, which reached the jazz charts and spawned a radio hit in “Til We Meet Again.” Pleasure Seeker\, his second album\, followed in 1997 and was equally successful. Taylor released his third album\, Undercover\, on Peak/N-Coded Music in February 2000. Also in 2000\, he toured as a special guest artist with the Rippingtons. Subsequent albums Hypnotic (2001)\, Steppin’ Out (2003)\, Nightlife (2005)\, and Ladies’ Choice (2007)\, all issued by Peak Records\, figured high in the contemporary jazz charts\, with Ladies’ Choice going all the way to number one. Peak released Taylor’s eighth album\, Burnin’\, in 2009. Two years later\, Taylor returned with the album Prime Time. In 2014\, Taylor released Tenacity\, which featured guest appearances from Jeff Lorber and Jonathan Fritzen. The album was produced by Dino Esposito\, who was also at the controls for Taylor’s 2016 release Countdown\, which cracked the Top Ten of the jazz album charts.

SUMMARY:Five For Fighting with String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Five For Fighting appearing at The Tin Pan in Richmond\, VA\n\n\nBox Office: The Tin Pan charges lower fees for box office versus online sales. Our box office is open Tues-Sat 12PM-5PM. Please visit us during those hours or call 804-447-8189. \nSeating: We assign seats in order of when you purchase your tickets. All reservations are subject to a food and drink minimum of $15 per guest. Gratuity of 20% is automatically added to all food and beverage purchases. \n \n\n\nFive For Fighting\nWebsite | Facebook | Instagram | Twitter \n\n\n\nThe only way for a story to progress is to turn the page. \nJohn Ondrasik— the songwriter and performer known as the platinum-selling\, Grammy-nominated\, Five For Fighting—knows this well. In the two decades since his first major single\, “Superman (It’s Not Easy)\,” hit the stratosphere\, the artist has both evolved and come back ‘round full circle. Creativity\, if nothing else\, is paradoxical. \nTo date\, Five For Fighting\, has released six studio LPs\, including the platinum certified America Town and The Battle for Everything; and the top-10 charting Two Lights\, along with an EP and live albums. Ondrasik has penned major hits\, including the chart-topping “100 Years\,” “The Riddle\,” “Chances\,” “World\,” and “Easy Tonight\,” which have earned over one billion streams and place him as a top-10 Hot Adult Contemporary artist for the 2000s. The reflective “100 Years” has joined “Superman (It’s Not Easy)” as part of the American Songbook and continues to stand the test of time at weddings\, birthdays\, graduations\, memorials\, and many a home video. Five For Fighting’s music has also been featured in more than 350 films\, television shows\, and commercials\, including the Oscar-winning The Blind Side\, Hawaii Five-O\, The Sopranos and the CBS drama\, Code Black. \nReferencing Fight For Fighting’s success in the 2000s\, AllMusic called Ondrasik “one of the decade’s leading balladeers.” But perhaps his biggest achievement is performing “Superman (It’s Not Easy)\,” at the 2001 Concert for New York\, a benefit show at Madison Square Garden that honored first responders and the fallen about a month after the tragic September 11th attacks. Ondrasik performed alongside other big-name artists like Paul McCartney\, The Who\, Elton John\, Billy Joel\, and dozens more. \nSays Ondrasik\, “It was a surreal experience. I was honored and blessed to pay tribute to the heroes who ran into those buildings at ground zero\, and hopefully\, through a song\, provide a little solace to family members who’d lost loved ones.” \nNow\, though\, what once was a dream is a reality. Buoyed by his unique falsetto voice and his prowess on the piano—a skill bestowed to him by his piano teacher mother—Ondrasik has made a solid reputation for himself in the world of songwriting and performance\, selling upwards of three million albums over his career. Not only does he tour with his popular string quartet and play solo and rock band gigs\, but he is also a high demand keynote speaker in which he combines themes of creativity and innovation with his business acumen.  Along with his father\, he has managed the family business throughout his musical career.  As Ondrasik happily puts it\, his company\, Precision Wire Products\, “makes the best shopping cart in the world!” \nHe’s presented at TEDx\, The Salk Institute\, American Cancer Society\, and dozens more. Perhaps being the son of an astrophysicist dad and having a degree in mathematics from UCLA has something to do with it. \n“Math was the Plan-B to get a real job when the music thing imploded\,” says Ondrasik\, with a chuckle. \nBut that doesn’t mean he wasn’t always a student at heart. As he wrote songs in his late teens and early 20s\, the Los Angeles-born Ondrasik studied his favorite rock vocalists. Finding out that singers like Freddie Mercury and Steve Perry studied classical voice\, he did too\, even seeking out some of those icons’ former teachers. No stone unturned. \nIn September of 2021\, Ondrasik released the powerful\, “Blood on My Hands\,” a protest song that takes a non-political\, moral stance against the 2021 United States chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan. While he’s well-versed in politics\, he isn’t of a bickering mindset. For Ondrasik\, it’s about the conversation. “Blood on My Hands\,” the track\, accompanying acoustic version\, and docu-music video\, “Blood on My Hands (White House Version)\,” has had millions of streams to date (despite little-to-no radio play). Like other protest songs of the past— “Ohio” by Crosby\, Stills\, Nash & Young or “The Times They Are a-Changin’” by Bob Dylan—Ondrasik aimed to point out a problem. While it’s critical of President Biden’s administration\, he says that if a Republican were President\, the song would remain the same\, only the names would change. \nThanks to the song\, years later\, Ondrasik is still working with evacuation groups that strive to help the American citizens left behind in Afghanistan by the U.S. government\, as well as the Afghan people who remain there largely under the threat of terrorism. It’s a difficult\, and at times a polarizing subject\, but it’s one Ondrasik is not shying away from. Not because of any politics or partisan pats on the back\, but simply because he knows it’s the right thing to do. \nOndrasik notes\, “There has been a tradition of musicians speaking truth to power. In the current tribal culture\, our freedom of expression has never been more critical.” \nIn 2022\, Ondrasik released “Can One Man Save The World?” with a powerful companion music video\, featuring the Ukrainian Orchestra filmed in Ukraine.  The song\, inspired by the courage of President Vladimir Zelenskyy and the people of Ukraine\, asks the nation\, and the world\, to stand up for core values of freedom and justice. \nMoved to action that extended beyond songwriting\, Ondrasik entered an area\, outside of Kyiv\, that had seen heavy combat shortly after the Russians pulled back from the capital with an American production crew. \n“I was honored to perform my new Ukraine tribute song Can One Man Save the World? with the Ukrainian Orchestra in the ruins of the Antonov Airport – in front of the Ukrainians’ beloved Mriya\, the world’s largest cargo plane that Russia destroyed at the outset of the war\,” said Ondrasik. “In sharing this musical collaboration on such hallowed ground\, I saw firsthand the fortitude and grace of the Ukrainian people\, who whether playing a violin or driving a tank\, will not be deterred by Putin’s atrocities and aggressions.” \nProceeds from the single and its companion video benefit the NGO Save Our Allies and further its mission of providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine and Afghanistan. \nRecently\, Ondrasik released the song\, “OK\,” along with a heart wrenching documentary music video that speaks to the Hamas attacks on Israel of Oct 7th\, 2023\, and the cultural aftermath both in the United States and around the world. \n“On October 10th\, 2023\, the Mayor of New York City\, Eric Adams\, made a powerful speech\, decrying the celebrations of Hamas massacres across New York City. His words of conscience\, “We Are Not Alright\,” begin my new song and music video\, “OK\,” which addresses the barbaric Hamas October 7 attacks in Israel\, and the global fallout that resulted. \nSuch is the theme of this song.  In short\, “We Are Not OK.” The “OK” (We Are Not OK) video has impacted globally with millions of streams. On April 13th\, 2024\, Ondrasik performed “OK” and “Superman” at “Hostage Square” in Tel Aviv for hostage families\, and the nation of Israel\, hours before Iran launched its missile attack. \nA Wall Street Journal feature headlined “A Lone Voice Sings for Israel” recognized Ondrasik as one of the few artists in the music industry to condemn Hamas and publicly call for the release of the hostages. \nSay’s John\, who is not Jewish\, “Something’s deeply wrong in the culture when people can’t come out and say that what happened on Oct. 7 was evil. No context. No buts. How did we get to a place where our music stars can’t condemn pure atrocities?” \nThroughout his multi-decade career\, which began when music publisher Carla Berkowitz (now his wife of 25 years) discerned him in a dive bar\, Ondrasik has been involved in multiple charity efforts. Along with supporting the troops via multiple USO tours\, Ondrasik created “The CD For the Troops” project with song and comedy compilations featuring artists like Billy Joel\, Melissa Ethridge\, Chris Rock\, and others\, gifting more than one million CDs to veterans and military families. John has also been deeply involved with the ALS charity “Augie’s Quest.” and is an ambassador for his pal Gary supporting the Gary Sinise Foundation. \nWhile he may not be as obsessive as he once was—writing upwards of dozens of songs per month\, Ondrasik is more focused today. He knows who he is\, as an artist and as a human being. His is a career molded by light and darkness. At one point\, he’d been looked over by every publishing house and label out there. At another\, he had one of the biggest songs in the world. Those extremes give a person perspective. \n“I’ve been incredibly blessed\,” he says. “I still pinch myself.” \nAs Five For Fighting\, which is a professional hockey term designating a five-minute penalty for fisticuffs on the ice\, Ondrasik has also developed a close relationship within the world of sports. He was a contributing writer for Sports Illustrated as well as for his beloved Los Angeles Kings. Five For Fighting was one of the first musical artists to perform on ESPN’s SportsCenter\, and has played The Daytona 500\, Monday Night Football\, The Heritage Classic\, the L.A. Kings outdoor hockey game\, and more. Recently\, John performed a version of 100 Years for CBS sports celebrating “100 Days to the Superbowl” and is routinely featured in Bally Sports broadcasts at the start of L.A. Kings hockey games. \n“Singing from home plate at Dodger stadium\,” Ondrasik says\, “where\, as a five-year-old boy\, my dad and I would catch bleacher bombs during batting practice—that was a dream.” \nToday\, Ondrasik spends his time writing music\, touring\, working at the family business\, supporting various charities\, and enjoying life with his wife\, two children\, and dog Ender. \nThrough “What Kind of World Do You Want\,” Ondrasik’s charity driven website – WhatKindofWorldDoYouWant.com – he has raised funds for Afghan evacuation organizations\, refugees and Augie’s Quest to cure ALS. He continues to support Save Our Allies and the Ukrainian people through “Can One Man Save the World”\, multiple charities fighting antisemitism globally\, and looks forward to returning to Ukraine and Israel in the near future. \nWhat motivates him musically now? \nHis latest three songs tell the story. He wants to promote dialogue. He’s set to speak his mind\, with words\, melody\, and conviction. \nOndrasik doesn’t shy away from nuance. He embraces it and seeks it – just as he does the next chorus\, the next verse\, all the while searching for a bridge. \nIt’s what artists and freethinkers do\, after all. \nIt’s his gift to share. \nHis decided obligation\, too. \n\n\nLace & Lee\nWebsite | Facebook | Instagram \n\n\n\nLace & Lee is a folk-rock duo heavily influenced by the mystical wisdom of 60s and 70s storytelling\, with a twist of humor and bard-like prose. Caroline Lace and Olivia Lee began their musical journey at NYU Tisch and have since toured with Five For Fighting. Their ethereal vocals and risky harmonies carry the spirit and charm of Celtic music\, often holding a mirror up to the 21st century.

Helms\nWebsite | Facebook | Instagram \n\n\n\nEvery town has them.  \nThe underdogs. The people who never quite fit in. The ones who are misunderstood. The ones who strive\, stumble\, and keep going anyway. \nWith his second album\, One for the Losers\, Colby T. Helms tells their stories. \nRaised in the Blue Ridge foothills of Southwest Virginia\, Helms launched his career as a teenager\, writing raw and ragged songs that drew from the people\, places\, stories\, and struggles that shaped him. If his debut album chronicled his own experience\, then One for the Losers widens the frame by looking outward. Across a dozen tracks\, Helms shines a light on the overlooked and misunderstood characters who’ve crossed his path\, from troubled friends and fallen mentors to moonshiners\, immigrants\, and working-class Virginians trying to survive in a world that threatens to leave them behind. \n“This is a record for people who don’t feel like they have a voice\,” he says\, speaking with a southern drawl colored not only by his Appalachian roots\, but by the years he’s spent singing at folk festivals\, fiddlers’ conventions\, campgrounds\, and dive bars\, too. “I wrote my first album while I was still in high school\, then I spent a few years on the road\, playing those songs every night. One for the Losers delves into what it’s like to be a road musician\, as well as the characters and challenges you encounter along the way — and some of the ones waiting for you back home\, too.” \nCountry. Bluegrass. Folk. Helms’ interpretation of American mountain music bears the fingerprints of them all. Largely recorded in Nashville with producer David “Ferg” Ferguson\, the album is as diverse as its influences\, balancing electric full-band performances with intimate\, stripped-back recordings that place Helms’ storytelling front and center. For Helms\, that balance feels like an extension of a childhood spent on the borderlines\, embracing the grey areas between social groups. \n“In high school\, you were either an artistic kid who did choir and theater\, or you were a redneck in FFA\,” he remembers. “I did it all. I never fit into any one category\, and I think my music is the same way. I play multiple instruments. I play multiple genres. I’ve got more than a few sides of music in me.” \nThat diversity springs to life on the album’s title track\, which was inspired by a childhood friend whose struggles with alcohol ended in tragedy. Rather than offering easy answers\, Helms uses the song to wrestle with grief\, survivor’s guilt\, and resilience. “Young and Dumb” examines addiction through the eyes of someone losing a battle with it. “Deadhead on the Weekend” tells the true story a troubled former boss whose self-destruction ultimately cost him his job\, while acknowledging the lessons he still left behind. \nElsewhere\, Helms broadens the album’s perspective. “Armed and Dangerous” tells the story of his girlfriend’s father\, who crossed the U.S.-Mexico border as a child and survived hardships that forced him into a life few Americans could imagine. Built around cinematic imagery and rhythms inspired by Mexican music\, the song offers a perspective rarely heard in contemporary country songwriting. Then there’s “Ballad of the Bondurant Boys\,” an epic acoustic narrative inspired by Franklin County’s infamous moonshine era. Like many of Helms’ best songs\, it blurs the line between history lesson and folk tale\, preserving a piece of regional culture while emphasizing more universal themes like power\, injustice\, and survival. \nYou can take Helms out of Virginia\, but you can’t take Virginia out of Helms. His songwriting incorporates waltzes\, ballads\, and old-school rhythms that once formed the backbone of Appalachian dances but have become rare in modern roots music. Songs like “Fool’s Gold\,” “Voices Shot\,” and “Ballad of the Bondurant Boys” pay tribute to those traditions\, while tracks like “Welcome to the Freak Show” serve as a mission statement\, reminding us that regardless of background\, geography\, or circumstance\, everyone deserves a seat at the table. “Whether you’re from the backwoods or suburbs\, we all have the same blood in our veins\,” he says. \nThat idea may be the thread connecting every song on One For the Losers. Whether he’s singing about a struggling musician\, a moonshiner\, a man crossing the desert in search of a better life\, or a friend lost too soon\, Helms approaches each story with compassion. He isn’t interested in dividing people into winners and losers. He’s more interested in understanding them…and maybe drawing a few connections between them\, too.  \nFor Helms\, that responsibility carries extra weight because of where he comes from. Appalachia is one of the most misunderstood regions in America\, often flattened into stereotypes that ignore its complexity and creativity. As a proud resident of the area\, he hopes to offer a fuller picture. “Appalachia isn’t represented to its fullest extent\,” he says. “Artists like me\, it’s our job to carry that torch and shed some light on that region.” \nWith One for the Losers\, Colby T. Helms does more than shine a light on Appalachia. He shines a light on the people living within it: the dreamers\, outcasts\, survivors\, cautionary tales\, and everyday souls whose stories rarely make the spotlight\, but are just as deserving as everybody else.

SUMMARY:Charlie Mars & Abe Partridge
DESCRIPTION:Charlie Mars & Abe Partridge appearing at The Tin Pan in Richmond\, VA\n\n\nBox Office: The Tin Pan charges lower fees for box office versus online sales. Our box office is open Tue-Sat 12PM-5PM. Please visit us during those hours or call 804-447-8189. \nSeating: We assign seats in order of when you purchase your tickets. All reservations are subject to a food and drink minimum of $15 per guest. Gratuity of 20% is automatically added to all food and beverage purchases. \n \n\n\nCharlie Mars\nWebsite | Facebook | Instagram | Twitter \n\n\n\nCharlie Mars lives on a gravel paved County Road in the hill country of Yalobusha County\, Mississippi. Why? He used to live in a college town with all the college town stuff that musicians like. He fell in love with these Cane Corso Mastiff puppies on Instagram that a guy in Brazil was breeding\, and Charlie had recently made some money on a crypto coin called Shiba Inu\, that was enough to pay for the dog and shipping. The puppy from Brazil that Charlie picked up in Arkansas would grow to be 130 lbs\, and quite a handful. After the dog bit a friend in the little town Charlie was living in\, his brother found some clear cut land in the middle of nowhere with a weird house on it\, and Charlie decided to buy it and move there. His dog needed some space and he was burned out on the whole “modern thing”. His Grandfather was a cattle farmer and a lot of the people he respected did things close to the land he purchased. He got rid of a television and learned how to harvest vegetables. He introduced himself to his neighbors and started writing about what was around him in his new country home. \nGrowing up in Mississippi\, he was a kid who listened to the radio a lot. WNSL played 80’s pop radio hits\, and he also got into classic singer-songwriters like Neil Young and Jackson Browne. \nWhen he was in high school\, he formed his first band that played a mix of covers and originals. They would play at the local VFW and Charlie remembers his mother would often need to drive the band members home in her station wagon when they drank too much at gigs. \nCharlie would start to write his own songs with the intent of never squeezing himself into a single genre. He tried to keep his initial songs “classic”\, and he always liked Country music (the less popular kind). He then got into Jam Bands and Alt-Country music\, especially Uncle Tupelo. He majored in English while attending college at SMU in Dallas\, and always liked being a wordsmith. A friend introduced Charlie to Daniel Lanois’ music\, which inspired him to start experimenting more with atmospheric sounds. Like any songwriter worth his salt\, Mars employs his art as a channel towards personal discovery\, candidly exploring all the human limitations – from pride and fear to cynicism self-doubt – that stand in the way of his attaining true happiness. \nHe has released 7 studio albums\, a series of EPs\, and several singles over the past 20 years. He’s shared the stage with the likes of REM\, KT Tunstall and Steve Earle\, and has been profiled in Forbes\, USA Today\, American Songwriter and many major media outlets. If you ask him\, Charlie says he’s made a living playing in small clubs and backyards. But he still wants to have a tour bus and play in front of big crowds. “It’s fun to have a dream. It keeps me going” he says. “I can’t believe I made it this far in music. I figure while I had the chance\, I should try to represent the people and the culture that shaped me.” \n\n\nAbe Partridge\nWebsite | Facebook | Instagram \n\n\n\nAbe Partridge is a heralded musician\, singer/songwriter\, visual artist\, storyteller and documentarian based in Mobile\, Alabama. Since the release of his debut album Cotton Fields and Blood for Days in 2018\, Partridge has toured relentlessly\, including several tours throughout Europe. He is a regular at several great music festivals such as the 30a Songwriters Fest\, and the Laurel Cove Music Fest as well as listening rooms across the country including the legendary Bluebird Cafe in Nashville\, Eddies Attic in Atlanta\, and Duke’s in Indianapolis. Recently\, he toured extensively with Matthew Sweet\, Drivin’ N Cryin’\, and Dar Williams in support of his latest release Love in the Dark. He has performed on several syndicated NPR radio programs including\, Mountain Stage and Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour.  \nPartridge along with co-producer Ferrill Gibbs created the Alabama Astronaut podcast\, where Abe attempts to properly record songs previously undocumented at holiness\, serpent-handling churches in Appalachia. It was in the Top Ten documentary podcasts on Apple Podcasts within days of its release and now has over 100k downloads and a 4.9-star rating.  \nWhen Partridge is not writing or touring\, he is also a highly acclaimed visual artist. His paintings\, primarily acrylic on tarred board and watercolors\, now hang in art galleries around the southeast and in the private collections of Tyler Childers\, Mike Wolfe (American Pickers)\, Rick Hirsch (Wet Willie)\, Tommy Stinson (The Replacements) and Tommy Prine. Abe’s art is featured yearly at Howard Finster’s Paradise Gardens. His artwork was featured in Stephen King’s 2019 sequel to The Shining – Dr. Sleep. He painted the cover art for Charlie Parr’s\, Last Of The Better Days Ahead (Smithsonian Folkways). He also created art for Tyler Childers’ 2022 release\, Can I Take My Hounds To Heaven? (RCA)\, as well as promotional posters for The Red Clay Strays’ 2024 release Made by These Moments (RCA) and a limited version cover art for their 2026 single\, Demons In Your Choir (RCA).  \nPartridge’s first major art exhibition With Signs Following was on display at the Alabama Contemporary Art Center in Mobile\, AL in 2023. His book “With Signs Following – Portraits + Stories from the Serpent-Handling Faith” released following the exhibit to wide acclaim. \nThree members of The Red Clay Strays occasionally join Abe for a punk side-project they share together\, The Psych Peas. They have one album\, Lackluster\, that has only been released on physical formats. The band has created a reputation for giving high-energy\, chaotic live performances\, and has garnered a cult-like following. John P. Strohm of The Lemonheads compared them to “Scratch Acid and Butthole Surfers in their prime”. \nAbe also works with the legendary North Carolina songwriter\, David Childers and his band The Serpents. Together\, they are The Satan\, You’re a Liars\, with an album\, Let’s Build This House Together\, released on vinyl\, CD\, digital download\, and Bandcamp in early 2025. \nHe is now gearing up for a 2027 release of a new album produced by Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth.  \nAmerican Songwriter Magazine said\, “Abe Partridge has established himself as one of the most respected songwriters and visual folk artists in the southeast.”

DESCRIPTION:Peter White appearing at The Tin Pan in Richmond\, VA\n\n\nBox Office: The Tin Pan charges lower fees for box office versus online sales. \n \n\n\nPeter White\nWebsite | Facebook | Instagram | Twitter \n\n\n\nOver the years\, Peter White has maintained a reputation as one of the most versatile and prolific acoustic guitarists on the contemporary jazz landscape. Armed with an unparalleled combination of lyricism and energy\, he combines elements of jazz\, pop and classical guitar to create a sound that is singular and at the same time accessible to a broad audience. \nBorn in 1954 in Luton\, a small town north of London\, White and his family moved to nearby Letchworth shortly after he was born. As a child\, he learned to play several musical instruments\, including the clarinet\, trombone\, violin and piano. And of course\, like so many youngsters growing up during the heyday of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones\, he gravitated to the guitar. \nHe learned his first chords on an acoustic guitar\, then bought his first electric guitar in his early teens and studied the recordings of the reigning guitar gods of the day – Jimi Hendrix\, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. But his musical aspirations ultimately veered back in an acoustic direction following an accident that doomed his beloved electric guitar. The axe was destroyed in a fire\, one that White’s younger brother Danny – an aspiring pianist – accidentally started. \n“The funny thing is that Danny didn’t actually admit to setting that fire for at least twenty-five years\,” says White. “I had been kind of obsessed with the electric guitar at that point in my life\, so that episode kind of forced me to go back to playing the acoustic. In retrospect\, that’s a good thing.” \nIndeed\, White’s interests after the accident shifted more toward the music of acoustic artists like Crosby\, Stills and Nash\, James Taylor\, and Joni Mitchell. Plugged or unplugged\, he had decided by his late teens that music was his calling\, and his first professional gig was at a holiday resort in England when he was 19 years old. \nBarely a year later\, he was invited to join Al Stewart’s band as a keyboardist for a tour of England\, Scotland\, and the U.S. in 1975. In addition to opening for artists like Linda Ronstadt\, Billy Joel and Queen\, White worked with Stewart in the studio in the making of Year of the Cat\, which became a huge hit for Stewart in 1976. The tour and the album marked the beginning of a twenty-year association with Stewart. In that time\, the two musicians co-wrote numerous songs\, including Stewart’s 1978 hit\, “Time Passages.” \nBy the beginning of the ‘80s\, White and Stewart had relocated to Los Angeles\, formed a band called Shot in the Dark\, and established a music publishing company called Lobster Music. Around the same time\, Danny White – he of the burning guitar incident several years earlier – formed a group called Matt Bianco\, which included a talented Polish singer named Basia Trzetrzelewska. Danny White and Basia splintered off to launch the singer’s solo career with the 1987 debut album\, Time and Tide\, which featured Peter White on guitar. \nAfter fifteen years as a backup musician and a session player\, White launched his solo recording career with the 1990 release of Reveillez-Vous (French for “Wake up\,” a title chosen by White in honor of his French mother). The album included several unused songs that White had written for Stewart\, and it became a favorite among contemporary jazz radio stations. \nHe followed with three records on the Sindrome label – Excusez-Moi (1991)\, Promenade (1993) and Reflections (1994) – before signing with Columbia for the 1996 release of Caravan of Dreams. He maintained an ambitious release schedule through the ‘90s and beyond\, but also found time to appear on recordings  by many of his friends\, including Dave Koz\, Rick Braun\, Richard Elliot\, Jeff Golub\, Lee Ritenour\, Kirk Whalum\, Boney James and many others. \nOn the road\, he has participated in numerous “Guitars and Saxes” tours with the aforementioned players\, and has established an annual “Peter White Christmas Tour” – the latter enterprise fueled by the success of his two highly regarded holiday albums\, Songs of the Season (1997) and A Peter White Christmas (2007). \nGood Day\, released in 2009 on Peak Records\, a division of Concord Music Group\, was White’s first collection of original songs in several years. “I just started going through my backlog of material – songs that I’d never finished\, some going as far back as ten or fifteen years – and I discovered that I had a lot of gems that I really wanted to show to the world\,” he says. “I wanted to record them in my own time and in my own way\, without any outside influence or interference.” \nWhite released Here We Go in 2012 on Heads Up International\, a division of Concord Music Group. The 11-song set\, produced by White and DC (George Benson\, Larry Carlton\, Bob James\, Patty Austin)\, featured several high-profile guest musicians\, including saxophonists David Sanborn and Kirk Whalum\, and pianist Philippe Saisse\, and included a range of original material written in the recent and distant past. “I wanted variety\,” says White. “I wanted songs that moved me\, in the hopes that they’ll move the listener as well. I’m on a journey\, and I want to bring with me anyone who’s willing to follow.” \nSmile\, released on October 7\, 2014\, is the final CD in White’s trilogy of albums consisting entirely of his own material. Co-produced with DC\, the recording features ten tracks – some were written recently\, some White wrote along the way with close friends and some were from the vault. Special guests include Mindi Abair (vocals)\, Rick Braun (horns)\, Euge Groove (soprano sax) and Philippe Saisse (keyboards\, piano and orchestra programming). White’s daughter\, Charlotte\, plays violin on one song. \nIn a career that spans nearly four decades\, over a dozen solo recordings and countless performances\, White insists that it’s the faces in the crowd and the fans that keep the experience fresh. “I’ll play a live show\, and someone will come to me afterward and say\, ‘Oh\, I loved this CD\,’ or ‘This song helped me through a bad time\,’” he explains. “Or I get emails from people saying\, ‘Oh\, I love the way you covered one of my favorite songs on your record back in 1994.’ The idea that someone can write me an email and tell me about something I did on a record that was released fifteen years ago – you can’t buy that. That’s priceless. That’s what keeps me going – the idea that people out there really care about what I do\, the idea that I’ve made a difference for someone.”

The family later migrated to New York City and presented free concerts in Central Park for 10 years. In 2016 British film producer and director Jeymes Samuel discovered Victory and sent a video of her singing in Central Park to Jay-Z. Jay-Z personally signed Victory and her family in 2016. In 2018 Victory released her debut album “The Broken Instrument” which went on to garner fans globally and caused her to gain recognition from hip-hop mogul Kanye West who later invited Victory to help him write his first Gospel Album entitled Jesus is King\, winning Victory her first Grammy as a songwriter. Victory opened The Secret Place Studios in 2020\, and released her sophomore album Glory Hour in 2023. She has toured in Europe in 2023\, 2024\, and 2025 of note performing at the Premier Gospel Awards in London\, England where she was nominated for International Artist of the Year in 2024. \n2025 has marked a special new milestone as Victory released her first Christmas album\, “Christmas Hymns.” This labor of love—steeped in reverence and wrapped in the tender peace of His presence—was created to accompany both the warmth of family gatherings and the quiet\, sacred moments we share with God alone. \n2026 is proving to be a year for the books. Victory steps into a new era as she releases her third studio album\, “Confessions of a Lonely Girl” on March 27th. It is already garnering national and international attention. The project marks Victory’s most emotionally transparent body of work to date\, capturing the quiet power of vulnerability\, faith\, and womanhood through a collection of deeply personal songs that unfold like private conversations with the soul. Arriving during Women’s History Month\, Confessions of a Lonely Girl draws from Victory’s lived experiences\, offering an unfiltered reflection on love\, spiritual resilience\, and the courage it takes to tell the truth even when it’s uncomfortable. She is looking forward to sharing this body of work with the world!

They are as uninhibited and unpredictable as the eclectic San Francisco Bay Area that claims them\, and for nearly 25 years their experiments have always proven sharp-witted and musically dazzling. They’re living proof that in music anyway\, evolution and intelligent design are entirely compatible.  \nThe band has been praised by the Chicago Tribune for its “near-ideal balance of irreverence\, chops\, discipline\, and originality.” The folk and roots underpinnings that have long been a Waybacks hallmark are still there\, but after years of playing a huge range of venues and festivals\, The Waybacks contuine to evolve. \n “The whole spirit of improvisation – that’s always been the cornerstone of this band for me\,” says singer\, songwriter and guitarist James Nash. “Through all the stylistic changes and regardless of the instruments we’re playing\, to me the fun of this band has always been that in some ways I can do whatever I feel like doing at any moment.” \nThat improvisational spirit meets the band’s dazzling turn-on-a dime skills during their annual Hillside Album Hour performances at MerleFest\, which have been an ongoing highlight of the festival since 2008. \nA four-piece with a full arsenal of acoustic and electric instruments\, configured around the hot guitar of James Nash and the fiddle virtuosity of Warren Hood and driven by the rhythm section of bassist Joe Kyle Jr. and drummer Chuck Hamilton\, the band filters genre through its own sensibilities and ends up transcending it altogether\, conjuring up musical landscapes that defy boundaries and find common ground. Add in those spirited flights of improvisation and a healthy dose of jaw-dropping chops and what emerges in the end is decidedly Waybacks. A trip well worth taking. \n“These guys can play like bandits.” – Ray Waddell\, BILLBOARD \n“ … geniuses … whose playing stacks up to anything you’ll find.” – Brad Kava\, SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS \n“The musical maelstrom known as The Waybacks blew in from San Francisco\, sending up such a startling tornado of aggressively performed\, high-spirited melodies as to remove all air from the room.  Their inspirational combination of influences — not to mention their recklessly brazen breakneck pace — exposed the band as virtuosos sharing a singular mind-set.” – Buzz McClain\, THE WASHINGTON POST

All reservations are subject to a food and drink minimum of $15 per guest. Gratuity of 20% is automatically added to all food and beverage purchases. \n \n\n\nChris Pierce\nWebsite | Facebook | Instagram \n\n\n\nChris Pierce has been a singular voice in American roots music for more than two decades. Over the course of eight solo albums\, many side projects\, and more guest appearances than most could do in one lifetime\, his powerful songs have given voice to the voiceless and shed light into dark and hidden corners of the American dream. \nPierce’s newest record\, Songs For The Heavy Hearted\, captures moments in the lives of everyday people as they struggle with crisis and encapsulates everything that has been so powerful about his music to date. \nAt its core\, Songs For The Heavy Hearted is a diary of — and love letter to — freedom fighters everywhere; its constant refrain is that love\, joy\, hope\, and softness are not things we need to sacrifice to fight the good fight. In fact\, they are integral. \nAs Pierce explains\, “Even as we refuse to take our rights for granted\, it’s getting harder to find a little bit of light to keep us going. Whatever happens\, we have to find a way to count our blessings and seek liberty for ourselves and fight for the liberty of others.” \nThese are lessons Pierce learned early on. Growing up in an interracial household when his parents’ marriage still wasn’t recognized as legal in 16 states\, he witnessed a cross burned on his front lawn as a child. “I held optimism near to my heart\, even with the stuff we went through as a family\, we never gave way to despair.” \nWhen he was 15 and developed a rare hearing disorder called Otosclerosis that led to total hearing loss (before a surgery that regained partial hearing in one ear)\, he did not back down. “That could have been it for me\, but instead I learned resilience\,” Pierce says. “I turned a crisis into a superpower. It’s what you have to do.” \nWith supporting performances from Allison Russell\, Steve Earle\, Grey DeLisle\, and Garrison Starr\, Songs For The Heavy Hearted embodies the belief that ‘we shall overcome’ and the sentiment has never sounded more uplifting and within reach. \nOver decades of touring\, Pierce has performed as both a headliner and sought-after support act alongside Neil Young\, B.B. King\, Al Green\, Steve Earle\, Seal\, Aaron Neville\, Jill Scott\, Allison Russell\, the Blind Boys of Alabama\, and many others. Pierce has appeared on NPR’s World Cafe\, Mountain Stage\, American Folk Show and has had performances at Newport Folk Festival\, AmericanaFest\, Folk Alliance\, MerleFest\, Bottlerock\, Calgary Folk Festival\, Vancouver Folk Festival\, and more.

SUMMARY:Jeanette Harris
DESCRIPTION:Jeanette Harris appearing at The Tin Pan in Richmond\, VA\n\n\nBox Office: The Tin Pan charges lower fees for box office versus online sales. \n \n\n\nJeanette Harris\nWebsite | Instagram | Twitter | Spotify \n\n\n\nJeanette Harris is the scintillating saxtress of smooth jazz. This lady understands that energetic and captivating performances matched with uplifting and inspiring vibrations in the music are the solid platinum recipe for success. Fans already recognize her for her wonderful cover of Stevie Wonder’s “All I Do\,” which hit Billboard’s smooth jazz singles chart from her previous album\, Saxified. Classically trained in both sax and piano\, a graduate of Boston’s famed Berklee College of Music\, and the saxophonist for the late\, great Teena Marie’s final year of touring\, Jeanette has weathered the fiercest challenges to bring the world her own brand of soulful healing vibes. That baptism awaits in her fourth CD\, Summer Rain\, on which Jeanette had a hand in writing all of the selections except her lovely cover of the Luther Vandross classic “Here and Now.” Its 11 sunny songs wrap the listener in the glow of fun love grooves and sweet romance. \n“The music of Summer Rain is all about a positive vibe\,” Jeanette states. “It’s about staying in love…never falling out of love\, feeling good\, being faithful and always following a positive route. Great things have happened for me in the last year. I’ve learned what’s really important in life – my family and my music.” \nThose looking to hear Jeanette really dig in on her horn should focus on two songs that feature her friend Darrell Crooks on guitar. The first is the dreamy “Take Me There\,” a sensual mellow groove that finds Jeanette layering her horn in subtle combinations that tease\, tickle and mesmerize the ear. And then there’s “The Ride\,” a techno groove that bumps into some truly heated interplay and exchange between Jeanette and Darrell that makes you want to see what all of that energy looks\, sounds and feels like live on stage. Other highlights include the playful “Ja’licious” (Jeanette’s sassy melding of the word “jazz” with “delicious”)\, the radiant “Oh So Good” and the laidback groove “Chillin’.” “My rapper friends say they can really flow on that one\,” Jeanette shares with a laugh. \nExtra special are the passionately building “Passing Time” (a song featuring keyboardist George Freeman that initially came to her – out of the blue – in the shower)\, the lusciously melodic “Just Keep Holding On” (one of two writing collaborations with the prolific Chuck Cymone)\, and the spicily syncopated “Muy Caliente’” – Jeanette’s maiden foray into Latin Groove on which she also plays some mean piano. Listen closely…ai cuidado! \nThe love-at-first-sight scenario song/title track of Summer Rain showcases the vocals of Jeanette’s secret weapon singer Joel Bowers – math teacher by day\, soul crooner by night. “One of my trademarks is writing a song for a vocalist then having the instrumental version on the same album\,” she offers. “On my CD Saxified\, I wrote the lyrics first for ‘You Can Dance’ then reworked it for my saxophone. I switched it up for ‘Summer Rain’ and wrote the music first\, then the words. I wrote the lyrics with my mother and think it’s beautiful. It’s about a guy who sees a pretty lady in the rain and falls for her instantly. It’s important to remember those moments…especially when that person makes you angry! Reflect on that memory. You’ll be more humble and understanding.” \nEqually inspired\, but in a completely different light is Summer Rain’s other vocal piece\, “Thankful\,” a heartfelt offering of gratitude sent up to Jesus in song. “It’s important to give thanks to The Lord\,” she says. “‘Thankful’ came from my heart with lyrics that I truly feel deeply.” \n***** \nJeanette Harris was born and raised in California’s post-Gold Rush town of Fresno in the center of the San Joaquin Valley. Reared by her mother\, Annette\, and her church organist father\, Floyd Harris – both of deep spiritual faith and intense believers in the art of music – Jeanette and her older brother\, Michael\, received their love of God and family genetically. \n“When I was 5\, my father put a guitar in my hands\,” Jeanette begins. “A year later\, he switched me to piano with a private teacher. I didn’t like it. Reading treble and bass clefs was so overwhelming that I would cry\, but it gave me a great jumpstart. One day while driving me to 4th grade\, Mom was playing a cassette by Grover Washington\, Jr. I remember looking at the picture of his alto sax. It was beautiful and Grover made it look so hip. I felt it would be the perfect instrument for me.” \nJeanette played saxophone and piano from grade school to high school where band teacher Steve Alcala also had her play in the Fresno City College jazz band even before she graduated high school. She won numerous awards and accolades\, which led to a scholarship to attend Berklee in Boston where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Performance. \nBack in Fresno\, Jeanette recorded her first self-released CD\, Here and There\, grabbing brother Michael to play drums with Patrick Olvera on bass\, and began building a following by regularly packing Mike’s Pub & Pizzeria. She recorded her official debut album Reflections followed by Smooth Holiday Greetings on her family’s J&M Records (Jeanette & Michael’s initials\, Mom and Dad’s funds). \nCiting her influences\, Jeanette continues\, “(Saxophonist) Richard Elliot brought some serious R&B groove at a time when smooth jazz really needed more of that funk vibe\, especially his song ‘Corner Pocket.’ I just loved his production! As a composer\, Stevie Wonder’s music touches the hearts of people with lyrics that have strong meanings\, and beautiful chords and melodies. And (guitarist) Norman Brown is the one that inspired me to want to be a performer when my parents took me to see him for my very first concert at The Bastille in Hanford\, CA. He gave me chills!” After crossing paths with Brown on the road\, Jeanette co-wrote a song with him that became the title track of her fourth CD\, Saxified. Brown recorded the song on his Grammy nominated CD\, 24/7\, with a different title\, “The Best is Yet to Come” featuring Gerald Albright. “To have Gerald playing a melody that I wrote is so amazing\,” Jeanette shares. Jeanette has played major events from The Coombs River Bend Ranch Festival to festivals in Japan and London.  She has performed as a side musician with Howard Hewett and Deniece Williams and has opened shows for greats ranging from smooth jazz stars Kirk Whalum\, Najee and The Rippingtons to R&B stars Babyface\, Phil Perry and KEM. “I got a standing ovation opening for KEM\,” Jeanette beams. “He came out to meet me and get my CD. His people said he never does that! That let me know my music does crossover.” \nThe most special person to come along in the course of Ms. Harris’ career thus far was singer/songwriter Marie\, who hired her unheard/unseen in a destiny-streaked leap of faith totally befitting Jeanette’s life and beliefs. “Her trumpet player saw me at the 2010 NAMM Show and asked for my business card. It had already been an unbelievable day where I got endorsements for both Unison saxophones and BARI Reeds. As I was driving home\, the guy called me and asked if I wanted to play with Teena for a concert…in London! I couldn’t believe it. I got 4 hours sleep that night studying her music then drove to L.A. for the audition. I had to pull off the freeway when Teena called me personally to get my passport information. The band tested my improvising skills on a funk song and a ballad – then I was in! Teena finally arrived\, gave me a big hug and away we went. She featured me in her last concerts playing sax on ‘I’m a Sucker for Your Love’ and ‘Portuguese Love\,’ and flute on ‘Déjà vu.’ She was truly a blessing in my life. Teena taught me how to be a strong female leader. I will miss her always.” \nNow with her fourth and finest CD Summer Rain bowing with her own signature Summer Rain perfume to match\, Jeanette Harris is unquestionably the next “Starchild of the Saxophone” touching hearts with every breath she takes.

No brand blueprint. Just a spontaneous jam session at Nashville’s Station Inn between a few friends. All women\, all seasoned players out to make a little noise on a weeknight. What happened next was alchemy: the room lit up\, the crowd roared and by the time the night was over\, something had shifted. The landscape of bluegrass\, and the women who played it\, would never be the same. \nThat night became the origin story of Sister Sadie: a band born by accident\, kept alive by chemistry and fueled by an unshakable bond between women who had spent their lives not just learning the rules\, but defying them. \nOver the next decade\, Sister Sadie would become a powerhouse. A GRAMMY-nominated\, IBMA-sweeping\, Grand Ole Opry-starring force. But for all the stages they played and accolades they earned\, they were still often reduced to a single line: all-female bluegrass band. \nIt was true\, yet reductive. Because Sister Sadie was never about labels. They were about the music. They are about the music. The stories. The fire. And the unrelenting drive to speak their truth through a tradition that hadn’t always made room for it. \n“We’ve never been interested in playing a role to fit someone else’s idea of what bluegrass should look like\,” says Deanie Richardson\, the band’s fiery fiddle player and a two-time IBMA Fiddle Player of the Year. “We’ve always played from the heart\, and from the gut.” \nNow\, with the release of All Will Be Well\, Sister Sadie isn’t just rewriting the rules. They’ve burned the whole damn playbook too. \nThis is the sound of a band that’s grown\, hurt\, healed and evolved. A record born not from the need to prove something\, but from the desire to tell the truth\, and loudly. On All Will Be Well\, you can still hear the fingerprints of bluegrass all over the instrumentation. But what rises above is something bigger: a fearless fusion of country\, Americana\, gospel and pure emotional storytelling. \n“This album is us\, no filter\,” says Gena Britt\, founding member and banjo powerhouse. “We didn’t try to stay inside any lines. We just wrote and recorded what felt honest.” \nAnd what stories they are. On “Prodigal Daughter\,” written by Dani Flowers\, lead vocalist Jaelee Roberts\, the 2024 IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year\, delivers a performance so raw and haunted\, it feels like she’s lived every lyric. “Do What You Want” crackles with righteous defiance\, a declaration of self-worth wrapped in swagger and stomp.  \n“This Is Me (You’re Not Talking To)” turns heartbreak into a battle cry\, while “If I Don’t Have You” strips everything back to what really matters: love\, desire and the spaces in between. \nThen there’s “Orphan Train\,” a stunning reimagining that runs on rails of grief and hope. It’s a nod to the past that feels chillingly present. The title track\, “All Will Be Well\,” a Gabe Dixon tune that offers a quiet benediction to anyone who’s been through the fire and comes out singing. And “Let the Circle Be Broken” flips the old gospel standard on its head\, turning rupture into renewal. \nThe band even makes room for a little romantic chaos on “Can’t Let Go of Your Love” — proof that heartbreak songs still slap hardest when they’re wrapped in banjo rolls and airtight harmonies. \nThis is not a band flexing for the industry. This is six women telling you exactly who they are. \nAnd who they are is formidable. \nGena Britt brings decades of road-tested banjo chops and a vocal tone that anchors the band’s harmony-rich sound. Deanie Richardson’s fiddle playing bridges ancient soul and modern electricity.  \nJaelee Roberts commands attention with a voice that can cut glass or cradle it. Dani Flowers\, a gifted songwriter with cuts across country and Americana\, adds heart and heat through her lyrics and guitar work. Rainy Miatke brings sharp mandolin picking and a fresh creative spark that fits like a glove. And the newest addition\, Katie Blomarz-Kimball\, brings an extensive bass knowledge that has become the inimitable driving force behind Sister Sadie. \n“We’re not trying to be anybody else\,” says Dani Flowers. “This is the most ‘us’ we’ve ever sounded.” \nThat feeling of arrival\, of authenticity\, pulses through every track on All Will Be Well. It’s a record built on scars and joy\, strength and surrender. It’s not just about surviving the storm\, it’s about coming out the other side louder. \n“It’s not about being bluegrass enough\,” says Jaelee Roberts. “It’s about being brave enough to evolve.” \nThat evolution has been hard won. Sister Sadie has spent years fighting for their space in a genre that often asked them to shrink. But instead of shrinking\, they rose and continue rising.  \nThree IBMA Vocal Group of the Year awards. Two GRAMMY nominations. A headline spot at nearly every major roots festival. A seat on the Opry stage. And most importantly\, the voice of the next generation of roots music. \nStill\, All Will Be Well marks a new chapter. A band no longer defined by what they represent but by what they sound like. \n“This record is a reminder that you can stay rooted and still grow wild\,” says Rainy Miatke. \nFrom gut-punch ballads to high-octane instrumental parts\, All Will Be Well is the album Sister Sadie was always meant to make. Not for the industry. Not for the silencers. But for the women they’ve become and the world ready to listen. \nBecause yes\, Sister Sadie is still a bluegrass band. But they’re also more. \nThey are country with claws. Americana with muscle. Harmony-driven and hellbent on telling the truth. And they’re not asking for permission anymore. \nThey’re making room. They’re taking names. \nAnd they’re just getting started.

In the making of their new album\, Mind\, Man\, Medicine\, Alabama-bred siblings Laura Rogers and Lydia Slagle found their songwriting transformed by a newfound sense of self-reliance and equanimity\, threading their lyrics with hard-won insight into the complexities of motherhood\, commitment\, compassion\, and self-preservation in an endlessly chaotic world. Centered on a kaleidoscopic sound that boldly blurs the edges of country-folk\, the duo’s fifth full-length ultimately confronts many of modern life’s harshest challenges while leading the listener toward a more open-hearted state of mind. \n“In our previous records there was a feeling that we had something to prove\, but now we’re leaning toward a place of peaceful acceptance and trying to stay immersed in the present\,” says Slagle\, noting that their shared experience in parenting young children greatly informed that shift in perspective. “There are definitely still moments of frustration and anger on this album\, but there’s also a little more light\,” Rogers adds. “I think a lot of that came from getting older\, and from letting go of the pressure we put on ourselves in the past. We finally reached the point of saying\, ‘Let’s just write the songs honestly as we can\, and trust that they’ll reach whoever they’re meant to reach.’” \nThe follow-up to Saturn Return—their 2020 Grammy-nominated LP co-produced by Brandi Carlile and lavishly praised by the likes of Rolling Stone—Mind\, Man\, Medicine finds The Secret Sisters co-producing alongside Ben Tanner (Alabama Shakes\, St. Paul & the Broken Bones) and John Paul White (formerly of Grammy-winning duo the Civil Wars). “On Saturn Return we’d gotten much more confident as far as directing the sound of the record and knowing how to capture our voices in the most honest way\, so it felt like the right time for our first foray into production\,” says Rogers. \nThe latest in a series of critically lauded releases\, the album came to life at FAME Studios (the historic spot in their hometown of Muscle Shoals) and at Sun Drop Sound in nearby Florence\, with contributions from such esteemed musicians as Alabama Shakes bassist Zac Cockrell and legendary multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell (Paul Simon\, Willie Nelson\, Levon Helm). \nReferring to The Secret Sisters’ latest chapter as “one where we seek\, savor\, and settle\,” the duo lifted the title to Mind\, Man\, Medicine from a lyric in “Same Water”: a gorgeously bluesy meditation on the search for healing in a profoundly troubled world\, channeling both weariness and empathy with soulful conviction. “There’s a line in ‘Same Water’ that says ‘Mind or man or medicine/I have tried them all\,’ which feels like it encompasses everything we were trying to say on this record\,” Slagle explains. “In a lot of these songs we’re struggling with our own minds and emotions\, with our relationships\, and with whatever we’re using to try to cope and find relief.” \nIn a lovely introduction to the album’s expansive sound\, Mind\, Man\, Medicine opens on a hypnotic number called “Space.” With its stark yet sprawling arrangement of luminous piano\, otherworldly synth\, and moody guitar tones—achieved in part through Slagle’s performance on rubber bridge guitar—“Space” infuses an element of dreamy psychedelia into The Secret Sisters’ contemplation of human connection and all its intricacies. “It’s about recognizing that loving someone isn’t always going to be easy\, especially when they have a belief or a political leaning that you disagree with\,” says Rogers. “It’s so simple to project your desires onto someone else\, but in the end you have to hold onto what you love and value about them\, even when it gets tough.” \nIn its lived-in exploration of what holds us together and tears us apart\, Mind\, Man\, Medicine delves further into nuanced social commentary on “If the World Was a House.” “We’ve all heard about moments in history where people collectively experienced something very challenging\, but ended up coming out of it stronger\,” says Rogers. “When I look at the world around us\, it seems like the pandemic didn’t have that effect—if anything\, it feels like we’re even more divided now. That song is wrestling with a longing for everyone to take better care of each other\, and to recognize that every person you share the planet with matters just as much as you do.” \nAstute observers of the heart’s most intimate dimensions\, The Secret Sisters also offer up such wildly effusive love songs as “Paperweight”—a prime showcase for their deep-rooted country sensibilities\, graced with galloping rhythms and a bit of exquisitely nimble fiddle work from Campbell. “I tend to go with the flow in a way that can be unhealthy\, where I sometimes hold back from speaking up for myself because I don’t want to ruffle any feathers\,” says Slagle. “But one thing that’s always made everything feel solid and stable is my relationship with my husband\, so I wrote ‘Paperweight’ about having that person who keeps you grounded when you feel like you might just float away.” Meanwhile\, on “All The Ways\,” singer/songwriter Ray LaMontagne lends his raspy vocals to a slow-burning track touched with all the sublime simplicity and low-slung grooves of classic R&B. “I love those moments in a live show when everyone sings together and there’s a feeling of the artist and audience sharing in the song’s performance\,” says Rogers. “I wanted to create a chorus like that—something everyone can sing at the top of their lungs—and eventually it evolved into a song about feeling strong and powerful in your own femininity.” \nElsewhere on Mind\, Man\, Medicine\, The Secret Sisters bring their layered introspection and boundless sensitivity to such complicated subjects as fractured friendships (“Never Walk Away”)\, the interconnectedness of love and advocacy (“I’ve Got Your Back”)\, the loss of identity often experienced in the early stages of motherhood (“Bear With Me”)\, and the singular joy of truly conditional love (“I Can Never Be Without You Anymore”). “Through our experience in raising children\, Lydia and I have both had the realization that there’s nowhere we could go on this entire planet where our hearts won’t be with our kids\,” says Rogers in discussing the inspiration behind “I Can Never Be Without You Anymore.” “That can be a difficult reality at times\, but it’s glorious as well. I’m really proud of that one\, and of the fact that we were able to write a love song that comes from a less painful place than many of our love songs in the past.” \nLooking back on the creation of Mind\, Man\, Medicine\, The Secret Sisters reveal that the immense support of their fans played a major role in their willingness to tread previously uncharted emotional terrain. “I remember playing a show last fall and expressing my gratitude to the crowd that they’d come out to see us\, because as mothers of young children we now understand how challenging that can be\,” says Rogers. “Later on that night a woman came up to us with her daughter and husband and said something like\, ‘I know it’s so hard to leave your babies—but you leaving your babies at home for a little while is what makes moments like this happen for other families.’ It was so gratifying to hear that\, and reminded me of the whole purpose behind the music that we make: it’s to benefit the hearts of other people\, anyone who needs that healing or validation or connection\, or even just the space to cry. That’s why we keep doing this.”
