No brand blueprint. Just a spontaneous jam session at Nashville’s Station Inn between a few friends. All women\, all seasoned players out to make a little noise on a weeknight. What happened next was alchemy: the room lit up\, the crowd roared and by the time the night was over\, something had shifted. The landscape of bluegrass\, and the women who played it\, would never be the same. \nThat night became the origin story of Sister Sadie: a band born by accident\, kept alive by chemistry and fueled by an unshakable bond between women who had spent their lives not just learning the rules\, but defying them. \nOver the next decade\, Sister Sadie would become a powerhouse. A GRAMMY-nominated\, IBMA-sweeping\, Grand Ole Opry-starring force. But for all the stages they played and accolades they earned\, they were still often reduced to a single line: all-female bluegrass band. \nIt was true\, yet reductive. Because Sister Sadie was never about labels. They were about the music. They are about the music. The stories. The fire. And the unrelenting drive to speak their truth through a tradition that hadn’t always made room for it. \n“We’ve never been interested in playing a role to fit someone else’s idea of what bluegrass should look like\,” says Deanie Richardson\, the band’s fiery fiddle player and a two-time IBMA Fiddle Player of the Year. “We’ve always played from the heart\, and from the gut.” \nNow\, with the release of All Will Be Well\, Sister Sadie isn’t just rewriting the rules. They’ve burned the whole damn playbook too. \nThis is the sound of a band that’s grown\, hurt\, healed and evolved. A record born not from the need to prove something\, but from the desire to tell the truth\, and loudly. On All Will Be Well\, you can still hear the fingerprints of bluegrass all over the instrumentation. But what rises above is something bigger: a fearless fusion of country\, Americana\, gospel and pure emotional storytelling. \n“This album is us\, no filter\,” says Gena Britt\, founding member and banjo powerhouse. “We didn’t try to stay inside any lines. We just wrote and recorded what felt honest.” \nAnd what stories they are. On “Prodigal Daughter\,” written by Dani Flowers\, lead vocalist Jaelee Roberts\, the 2024 IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year\, delivers a performance so raw and haunted\, it feels like she’s lived every lyric. “Do What You Want” crackles with righteous defiance\, a declaration of self-worth wrapped in swagger and stomp.  \n“This Is Me (You’re Not Talking To)” turns heartbreak into a battle cry\, while “If I Don’t Have You” strips everything back to what really matters: love\, desire and the spaces in between. \nThen there’s “Orphan Train\,” a stunning reimagining that runs on rails of grief and hope. It’s a nod to the past that feels chillingly present. The title track\, “All Will Be Well\,” a Gabe Dixon tune that offers a quiet benediction to anyone who’s been through the fire and comes out singing. And “Let the Circle Be Broken” flips the old gospel standard on its head\, turning rupture into renewal. \nThe band even makes room for a little romantic chaos on “Can’t Let Go of Your Love” — proof that heartbreak songs still slap hardest when they’re wrapped in banjo rolls and airtight harmonies. \nThis is not a band flexing for the industry. This is six women telling you exactly who they are. \nAnd who they are is formidable. \nGena Britt brings decades of road-tested banjo chops and a vocal tone that anchors the band’s harmony-rich sound. Deanie Richardson’s fiddle playing bridges ancient soul and modern electricity.  \nJaelee Roberts commands attention with a voice that can cut glass or cradle it. Dani Flowers\, a gifted songwriter with cuts across country and Americana\, adds heart and heat through her lyrics and guitar work. Rainy Miatke brings sharp mandolin picking and a fresh creative spark that fits like a glove. And the newest addition\, Katie Blomarz-Kimball\, brings an extensive bass knowledge that has become the inimitable driving force behind Sister Sadie. \n“We’re not trying to be anybody else\,” says Dani Flowers. “This is the most ‘us’ we’ve ever sounded.” \nThat feeling of arrival\, of authenticity\, pulses through every track on All Will Be Well. In the making of their new album\, Mind\, Man\, Medicine\, Alabama-bred siblings Laura Rogers and Lydia Slagle found their songwriting transformed by a newfound sense of self-reliance and equanimity\, threading their lyrics with hard-won insight into the complexities of motherhood\, commitment\, compassion\, and self-preservation in an endlessly chaotic world. Centered on a kaleidoscopic sound that boldly blurs the edges of country-folk\, the duo’s fifth full-length ultimately confronts many of modern life’s harshest challenges while leading the listener toward a more open-hearted state of mind. \n“In our previous records there was a feeling that we had something to prove\, but now we’re leaning toward a place of peaceful acceptance and trying to stay immersed in the present\,” says Slagle\, noting that their shared experience in parenting young children greatly informed that shift in perspective. “There are definitely still moments of frustration and anger on this album\, but there’s also a little more light\,” Rogers adds. “I think a lot of that came from getting older\, and from letting go of the pressure we put on ourselves in the past. We finally reached the point of saying\, ‘Let’s just write the songs honestly as we can\, and trust that they’ll reach whoever they’re meant to reach.’” \nThe follow-up to Saturn Return—their 2020 Grammy-nominated LP co-produced by Brandi Carlile and lavishly praised by the likes of Rolling Stone—Mind\, Man\, Medicine finds The Secret Sisters co-producing alongside Ben Tanner (Alabama Shakes\, St. Paul & the Broken Bones) and John Paul White (formerly of Grammy-winning duo the Civil Wars). “On Saturn Return we’d gotten much more confident as far as directing the sound of the record and knowing how to capture our voices in the most honest way\, so it felt like the right time for our first foray into production\,” says Rogers. \nThe latest in a series of critically lauded releases\, the album came to life at FAME Studios (the historic spot in their hometown of Muscle Shoals) and at Sun Drop Sound in nearby Florence\, with contributions from such esteemed musicians as Alabama Shakes bassist Zac Cockrell and legendary multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell (Paul Simon\, Willie Nelson\, Levon Helm). \nReferring to The Secret Sisters’ latest chapter as “one where we seek\, savor\, and settle\,” the duo lifted the title to Mind\, Man\, Medicine from a lyric in “Same Water”: a gorgeously bluesy meditation on the search for healing in a profoundly troubled world\, channeling both weariness and empathy with soulful conviction. “There’s a line in ‘Same Water’ that says ‘Mind or man or medicine/I have tried them all\,’ which feels like it encompasses everything we were trying to say on this record\,” Slagle explains. “In a lot of these songs we’re struggling with our own minds and emotions\, with our relationships\, and with whatever we’re using to try to cope and find relief.” \nIn a lovely introduction to the album’s expansive sound\, Mind\, Man\, Medicine opens on a hypnotic number called “Space.” With its stark yet sprawling arrangement of luminous piano\, otherworldly synth\, and moody guitar tones—achieved in part through Slagle’s performance on rubber bridge guitar—“Space” infuses an element of dreamy psychedelia into The Secret Sisters’ contemplation of human connection and all its intricacies. “It’s about recognizing that loving someone isn’t always going to be easy\, especially when they have a belief or a political leaning that you disagree with\,” says Rogers. “It’s so simple to project your desires onto someone else\, but in the end you have to hold onto what you love and value about them\, even when it gets tough.” \nIn its lived-in exploration of what holds us together and tears us apart\, Mind\, Man\, Medicine delves further into nuanced social commentary on “If the World Was a House.” “We’ve all heard about moments in history where people collectively experienced something very challenging\, but ended up coming out of it stronger\,” says Rogers. “When I look at the world around us\, it seems like the pandemic didn’t have that effect—if anything\, it feels like we’re even more divided now. That song is wrestling with a longing for everyone to take better care of each other\, and to recognize that every person you share the planet with matters just as much as you do.” \nAstute observers of the heart’s most intimate dimensions\, The Secret Sisters also offer up such wildly effusive love songs as “Paperweight”—a prime showcase for their deep-rooted country sensibilities\, graced with galloping rhythms and a bit of exquisitely nimble fiddle work from Campbell. “I tend to go with the flow in a way that can be unhealthy\, where I sometimes hold back from speaking up for myself because I don’t want to ruffle any feathers\,” says Slagle. “But one thing that’s always made everything feel solid and stable is my relationship with my husband\, so I wrote ‘Paperweight’ about having that person who keeps you grounded when you feel like you might just float away.” Meanwhile\, on “All The Ways\,” singer/songwriter Ray LaMontagne lends his raspy vocals to a slow-burning track touched with all the sublime simplicity and low-slung grooves of classic R&B. “I love those moments in a live show when everyone sings together and there’s a feeling of the artist and audience sharing in the song’s performance\,” says Rogers. “I wanted to create a chorus like that—something everyone can sing at the top of their lungs—and eventually it evolved into a song about feeling strong and powerful in your own femininity.” \nElsewhere on Mind\, Man\, Medicine\, The Secret Sisters bring their layered introspection and boundless sensitivity to such complicated subjects as fractured friendships (“Never Walk Away”)\, the interconnectedness of love and advocacy (“I’ve Got Your Back”)\, the loss of identity often experienced in the early stages of motherhood (“Bear With Me”)\, and the singular joy of truly conditional love (“I Can Never Be Without You Anymore”). “Through our experience in raising children\, Lydia and I have both had the realization that there’s nowhere we could go on this entire planet where our hearts won’t be with our kids\,” says Rogers in discussing the inspiration behind “I Can Never Be Without You Anymore.” “That can be a difficult reality at times\, but it’s glorious as well. I’m really proud of that one\, and of the fact that we were able to write a love song that comes from a less painful place than many of our love songs in the past.” \nLooking back on the creation of Mind\, Man\, Medicine\, The Secret Sisters reveal that the immense support of their fans played a major role in their willingness to tread previously uncharted emotional terrain. “I remember playing a show last fall and expressing my gratitude to the crowd that they’d come out to see us\, because as mothers of young children we now understand how challenging that can be\,” says Rogers. “Later on that night a woman came up to us with her daughter and husband and said something like\, ‘I know it’s so hard to leave your babies—but you leaving your babies at home for a little while is what makes moments like this happen for other families.’ It was so gratifying to hear that\, and reminded me of the whole purpose behind the music that we make: it’s to benefit the hearts of other people\, anyone who needs that healing or validation or connection\, or even just the space to cry. It’s been a bit of a blessing and a curse\,” he says with a smile. “It’s taken me years to figure out. You know the world is run by tenor vocals and being a baritone\, you’ve always got to get a little creative to have that same kind of vocal impact.” \nDespite his self-effacing demeanor\, Flanigan’s voice has had considerable impact. Drawing comparisons to Joe Cocker and Chris Stapleton with his warm\, raspy tone\, Flanigan was a third-place finalist on The Voice as a member of Team Blake. Usher praised him as a “top gun” and Gwen Stefani said\, “Nobody has a voice that sounds like that. It’s just so rare.” Shelton was so impressed with the veteran road warrior that he joined Flanigan on the single “Grow Up\,” featured on his 2022 debut album Strong. \nHis new album\, The Man My Mama Raised\, showcases not only Flanigan’s gifts as a vocalist but also his songwriting prowess as he co-wrote nine of the 12 cuts. “I started working with a new producer for this record\, John Stone\, and when we first got together\, we decided to write the bulk of the record\,” he shares\, “but we also wanted to cut a couple of songs to really help set the direction\, so we picked two songs right off the bat. One was ‘Broken Heart’ and the other was ‘I Don’t Smoke.’ Those are the only two besides the cover of Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got to Do with It” that I didn’t write or co-write.” \nThe taut production combined with Flanigan’s smokey vocals and memorable songs meld to create an album that is rapidly expanding the singer/songwriter’s fan base. The project is the culmination of more than a decade of honing his skills through relentless touring\, all in pursuit of a dream that began during his childhood in the Catskill Mountains in a tiny town near Woodstock\, NY. “I was about 10 years old\, and I was pretty confident that I was going to be a musician\,” he says. “My mom and I used to write songs as a kid. They weren’t really great\, but we would just write songs all the time about anything. By the time I was 12\, my parents hooked me up with my guitar teacher and I’ve been really dedicated to it ever since.” \nThat dedication reached a higher level in 2019 when he sold everything\, bought a Winnebago and hit the road. There’s no substitute for playing night after night to test a musician’s resolve and dedication to their craft. It’s also an excellent opportunity to learn how to truly entertain any type of crowd. \n“As an artist\, it allowed me to see the country on a ground level which was super inspiring\,” he says. “I never would have had that insight if I didn’t do that. I’m mostly grateful for the hardships that came with it because it taught me just so much when it comes to just following your path and believing in yourself.” \nThat trial by fire helped Flanigan prove his mettle\, but it all came to a screeching halt when the pandemic hit. Like all musicians\, Flanigan found his career stalled by circumstances beyond his control. With just $90 in the bank\, his future was riding on an audition for The Voice. He took a shot\, succeeded and found a large and enthusiastic fan base. \nHis Reviver Records debut album\, Strong\, delivered on the promise Flanigan displayed on The Voice. “Grow Up” reached No. 5 on the US iTunes sales chart. He toured with Chris Janson and Trace Adkins\, and has been featured on CMT\, RFD-TV\, Fox News\, American Songwriter\, Whiskey Riff\, The Music Universe\, Country Now\, Everything Nash\, Entertainment Tonight\, People Magazine\, USA Today\, Yahoo News\, and The Wrap. \nHis new album looks sure to continue that momentum. “Our goal on this record was to create a new lane in country music\, something that was like totally my own\,” he says. “We wanted diversity and we were focused on great storytelling. Plus\, we were always keeping the live show in mind.” \nHe credits his producer for helping him realize his vision. “We met at the Island Time Music Festival\,” he says of connecting with Stone at the Isla Mujeres\, Mexico event. “We really hit it off. We were hanging out the whole time and about eight months later I gave him a call and asked him if he wanted to produce a couple of songs on this next record. It ended up turning from three songs to the whole record. We’ve been creating music ever since.” \nAlways evocative\, Flanigan sounds even more confident vocally on The Man My Mama Raised. “John definitely pushed the hell out of me on this record vocally and helped me learn the sections of my range and how to layer the stuff with the full band\,” he says. “I learned so much on my last record of what to do and what not to do vocally\, so it was a combination of all of that that kind of got us here today.” \nOne of the standout tracks on the The Man My Mama Raised is Flanigan’s sensuous take on Tina Turner’s classic. “‘What’s Love Got to Do with It’ is probably one of my favorite covers that I’ve ever done\,” Flanigan says. “It’s just a really fun song.” \nFlanigan also covers “I Don’t Smoke.” “This song was originally cut by Lee Brice and Warren Haynes\,” he smiles. “What I love about the song is that it’s this really celebratory fun jam of a song that is saying\, ‘I don’t smoke. I don’t drink. I don’t take no pills.’ I’ve been alcohol free for over nine years now\, so I’m always trying to write the next song that isn’t necessarily a drinking song.” \n“Gimme Cash” is an uptempo romp that pays homage to country music’s roots as Flanigan playfully sings\, “Just gimme Cash. You can keep the change.’” “I wrote that with John probably the week before we went to cut the rest of the record and we were like\, ‘We’ve got to cut this. It’s too fun\,’” he says. \nThe album isn’t short on such light-hearted numbers\, but the songs that are sure to cement Flanigan’s reputation as one of the premiere singer/songwriters of his generation are the reflective “Words I Never Heard An Old Man Say” and the intensely personal “The Man My Mama Raised.” “We were thinking about what your Grandpa would tell you\,” he says of penning “Words I Never Heard An Old Man Say” with Stone. “Then it slowly morphed into all these sayings like\, ‘What if we turned it to where it’s not the advice that you get\, but it’s all the things that you’ve never heard an old man that you respect ever say and the advice is in there?’ and that’s kind of what spurred the insight for it.” \nThe album’s title track was written after a heartbreaking loss. “This is probably the heaviest song on the record\,” he says of “The Man My Mama Raised\,” which he co-wrote with John Stone. “I lost my mother this past year in October. It’s really a tribute to her. You just hope that you can find a way to be half the man that your mama raised you to be. It’s the title track of the album because all these songs are the accumulation of who I am today and the artist I’ve become. I wouldn’t be any of that without her\, so it’s really just like an umbrella title for the whole record\, even though there’s every kind of emotion in this record. This is the most personal song.” \nLaying his heart bare with a poignant slice of life ballad or channeling his honky tonk energy into a roaring uptempo\, Flanigan serves up potent songs that reflect all facets of the human experience. And he does it all with an unmistakable\, achingly beautiful baritone that anchors each song in a way no one else can. “There’s relatability between all of us and the hardships and all the joys in life\,” Flanigan says. “I really want people to feel a connection after they listen to this album. “There’s a few songs that are just fun and are barn burners and then there’s some really\, really deep stuff that we all go through. He was short on money and was struggling to make a living. The Mt. Vernon\, NY native has recorded on six of the seven inhabitable continents\, and while Antarctica is not on his recording bucket list\, his short international list\, including Dubai\, Brazil\, South Africa\, Spain\, UK\, Canada\, is quite impressive. “Whether it’s a massive festival crowd of 30\,000 or an intimate restaurant audience of less than 60\, I refuse to rob my audience of great music\, top-notch effort and a good personal experience”\, says Baldwin.  \nHe’s been coined by industry peers as the “Ray Charles of Contemporary Jazz”\, having owned all but seven of his 34 solo recordings. He claims that ownership has helped to sustain him throughout the current pandemic era. \nHis Radio program\, NewUrbanJazz\, established in 2008\, celebrated its’ 700th consecutive weekly radio program on February 28\, 2022. \nThe pianist’s personal goal is to release a 12-song project per year\, and since 1988\, he has released over 34 projects\, of which 27 are owned by his company\, City Sketches Records (distributed by The Orchard/Sony Music). Discs #35 and 36 are in the works. \nBob’s current live disc\, “The Stay at Home Series” marks an industry adjustment. Recorded in 2020-2021\, this is a closed live recording in the studio with some of his New York musical compadres. With Cafe Da Silva and Chembo Corniel on percussion\, and his longtime music friends Tony Lewis and Dave Anderson on drums and bass\, the new project will spit out a Volume 2 in the near future.  \n“Being a musician\, we obviously had to make adjustments to the way we all do music\,” says the Native New Yorker. “Concerts were eliminated in 2020\, but fortunately\, owning your own music makes you halfway covid-proof\, and live streaming was the new normal”. \nHis current 2021 release\, “The UrbanSmooth Suite” was a vocal extravaganza with various vocalists Monica Mason\, Regina Troupe\, Toni Redd and others as well as Earth\, Wind and Fire original Ralph Johnson on drum on the uptempo “Dance 3000”. \nHis 2020 piece\, “Henna” explored a more natural sound with the aforementioned Da’ Silva from Brazil\, Anderson and Lewis\, but his 12-solo piece with Nils\, Beasley\, Alford\, Whiteside and company on “Club Life” was the record highlight as well as the late Rohn Lawrence on Guitar. \nHis ‘theme’ projects of Stevie Wonder (MelloWonder/Songs in the Key of Stevie)\, Thom Bell (Betcha By Golly Wow)\, and Michael Jackson (Never Can Say Goodbye) have all charted mightily on the Billboard Jazz charts\, all hitting in the top 15. His very latest\, Abbey Road and the Beatles has also crept into the top 20 on the charts as well. \nNever Can Say Goodbye and Never out of Season were both remixed and remastered in the spirit of hi-def (2018). Whereas older recordings would peak at the average 16-bit maximum\, Bob is trying to push the envelope in re-tracking some of the music in 24-bit (and sometimes 32-bit mode). \nThe Brazilian-American Soundtrack (2016) was a disc recorded in Brazil with a magical journey through Rio\, Ipanema Beach\, Atlanta and New York City and showcases original music\, plus music from legendary writers and artists like Djavan\, Ivan Lins and Antonio Carlos Jobim. \nWhat’s next? Well…funny you should ask. Bob Baldwin is re-writing and updating his book\, “You Better Ask Somebody”\, and will go in a little deeper on subjects like music streaming and the lowdown on Croton Jazz.
