Classically trained in both sax and piano\, a graduate of Boston’s famed Berklee College of Music\, and the saxophonist for the late\, great Teena Marie’s final year of touring\, Jeanette has weathered the fiercest challenges to bring the world her own brand of soulful healing vibes. That baptism awaits in her fourth CD\, Summer Rain\, on which Jeanette had a hand in writing all of the selections except her lovely cover of the Luther Vandross classic “Here and Now.” Its 11 sunny songs wrap the listener in the glow of fun love grooves and sweet romance. \n“The music of Summer Rain is all about a positive vibe\,” Jeanette states. “It’s about staying in love…never falling out of love\, feeling good\, being faithful and always following a positive route. Great things have happened for me in the last year. I’ve learned what’s really important in life – my family and my music.” \nThose looking to hear Jeanette really dig in on her horn should focus on two songs that feature her friend Darrell Crooks on guitar. The first is the dreamy “Take Me There\,” a sensual mellow groove that finds Jeanette layering her horn in subtle combinations that tease\, tickle and mesmerize the ear. Listen closely…ai cuidado! \nThe love-at-first-sight scenario song/title track of Summer Rain showcases the vocals of Jeanette’s secret weapon singer Joel Bowers – math teacher by day\, soul crooner by night. “One of my trademarks is writing a song for a vocalist then having the instrumental version on the same album\,” she offers. “On my CD Saxified\, I wrote the lyrics first for ‘You Can Dance’ then reworked it for my saxophone. I switched it up for ‘Summer Rain’ and wrote the music first\, then the words. I wrote the lyrics with my mother and think it’s beautiful. It’s about a guy who sees a pretty lady in the rain and falls for her instantly. It’s important to remember those moments…especially when that person makes you angry! Reflect on that memory. You’ll be more humble and understanding.” \nEqually inspired\, but in a completely different light is Summer Rain’s other vocal piece\, “Thankful\,” a heartfelt offering of gratitude sent up to Jesus in song. “It’s important to give thanks to The Lord\,” she says. “‘Thankful’ came from my heart with lyrics that I truly feel deeply.” \n***** \nJeanette Harris was born and raised in California’s post-Gold Rush town of Fresno in the center of the San Joaquin Valley. Reared by her mother\, Annette\, and her church organist father\, Floyd Harris – both of deep spiritual faith and intense believers in the art of music – Jeanette and her older brother\, Michael\, received their love of God and family genetically. \n“When I was 5\, my father put a guitar in my hands\,” Jeanette begins. “A year later\, he switched me to piano with a private teacher. I didn’t like it. Reading treble and bass clefs was so overwhelming that I would cry\, but it gave me a great jumpstart. One day while driving me to 4th grade\, Mom was playing a cassette by Grover Washington\, Jr. I remember looking at the picture of his alto sax. It was beautiful and Grover made it look so hip. I felt it would be the perfect instrument for me.” \nJeanette played saxophone and piano from grade school to high school where band teacher Steve Alcala also had her play in the Fresno City College jazz band even before she graduated high school. She won numerous awards and accolades\, which led to a scholarship to attend Berklee in Boston where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Performance. \nBack in Fresno\, Jeanette recorded her first self-released CD\, Here and There\, grabbing brother Michael to play drums with Patrick Olvera on bass\, and began building a following by regularly packing Mike’s Pub & Pizzeria. She recorded her official debut album Reflections followed by Smooth Holiday Greetings on her family’s J&M Records (Jeanette & Michael’s initials\, Mom and Dad’s funds). \nCiting her influences\, Jeanette continues\, “(Saxophonist) Richard Elliot brought some serious R&B groove at a time when smooth jazz really needed more of that funk vibe\, especially his song ‘Corner Pocket.’ I just loved his production! As a composer\, Stevie Wonder’s music touches the hearts of people with lyrics that have strong meanings\, and beautiful chords and melodies. And (guitarist) Norman Brown is the one that inspired me to want to be a performer when my parents took me to see him for my very first concert at The Bastille in Hanford\, CA. He gave me chills!” After crossing paths with Brown on the road\, Jeanette co-wrote a song with him that became the title track of her fourth CD\, Saxified. Brown recorded the song on his Grammy nominated CD\, 24/7\, with a different title\, “The Best is Yet to Come” featuring Gerald Albright. “To have Gerald playing a melody that I wrote is so amazing\,” Jeanette shares. Jeanette has played major events from The Coombs River Bend Ranch Festival to festivals in Japan and London.  She has performed as a side musician with Howard Hewett and Deniece Williams and has opened shows for greats ranging from smooth jazz stars Kirk Whalum\, Najee and The Rippingtons to R&B stars Babyface\, Phil Perry and KEM. “I got a standing ovation opening for KEM\,” Jeanette beams. “He came out to meet me and get my CD. His people said he never does that! That let me know my music does crossover.” \nThe most special person to come along in the course of Ms. Harris’ career thus far was singer/songwriter Marie\, who hired her unheard/unseen in a destiny-streaked leap of faith totally befitting Jeanette’s life and beliefs. “Her trumpet player saw me at the 2010 NAMM Show and asked for my business card. It had already been an unbelievable day where I got endorsements for both Unison saxophones and BARI Reeds. As I was driving home\, the guy called me and asked if I wanted to play with Teena for a concert…in London! I couldn’t believe it. I got 4 hours sleep that night studying her music then drove to L.A. for the audition. I had to pull off the freeway when Teena called me personally to get my passport information. The band tested my improvising skills on a funk song and a ballad – then I was in! Teena finally arrived\, gave me a big hug and away we went. She featured me in her last concerts playing sax on ‘I’m a Sucker for Your Love’ and ‘Portuguese Love\,’ and flute on ‘Déjà vu.’ She was truly a blessing in my life. Teena taught me how to be a strong female leader. Over the course of eight solo albums\, many side projects\, and more guest appearances than most could do in one lifetime\, his powerful songs have given voice to the voiceless and shed light into dark and hidden corners of the American dream. \nPierce’s newest record\, Songs For The Heavy Hearted\, captures moments in the lives of everyday people as they struggle with crisis and encapsulates everything that has been so powerful about his music to date. \nAt its core\, Songs For The Heavy Hearted is a diary of — and love letter to — freedom fighters everywhere; its constant refrain is that love\, joy\, hope\, and softness are not things we need to sacrifice to fight the good fight. Making the move to Richmond in 2002\, the band has built a reputation for sing-alongs\, dancing\, and audience participation. Consisting of traditional instruments like the tin whistle\, mandolin\, and violin\, the band brings an old Irish sound and an original blend of influences to their shows. And while the band long had a rotating cast of characters\, the current lineup has been performing regularly for the past eight years at venues like the Church Hill Irish Festival\, Northside Grill\, Poe’s Pub\, Mainline Brewery\, Gallery 5\, Final Gravity Brewing\, The Artemis in DC\, and many more.  \nThe Ex-Patriots are firmly rooted in the style of the Pogues and will always perform a few Pogues songs. The family later migrated to New York City and presented free concerts in Central Park for 10 years. In 2016 British film producer and director Jeymes Samuel discovered Victory and sent a video of her singing in Central Park to Jay-Z. Jay-Z personally signed Victory and her family in 2016. In 2018 Victory released her debut album “The Broken Instrument” which went on to garner fans globally and caused her to gain recognition from hip-hop mogul Kanye West who later invited Victory to help him write his first Gospel Album entitled Jesus is King\, winning Victory her first Grammy as a songwriter. Armed with an unparalleled combination of lyricism and energy\, he combines elements of jazz\, pop and classical guitar to create a sound that is singular and at the same time accessible to a broad audience. \nBorn in 1954 in Luton\, a small town north of London\, White and his family moved to nearby Letchworth shortly after he was born. As a child\, he learned to play several musical instruments\, including the clarinet\, trombone\, violin and piano. And of course\, like so many youngsters growing up during the heyday of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones\, he gravitated to the guitar. \nHe learned his first chords on an acoustic guitar\, then bought his first electric guitar in his early teens and studied the recordings of the reigning guitar gods of the day – Jimi Hendrix\, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. But his musical aspirations ultimately veered back in an acoustic direction following an accident that doomed his beloved electric guitar. The axe was destroyed in a fire\, one that White’s younger brother Danny – an aspiring pianist – accidentally started. \n“The funny thing is that Danny didn’t actually admit to setting that fire for at least twenty-five years\,” says White. “I had been kind of obsessed with the electric guitar at that point in my life\, so that episode kind of forced me to go back to playing the acoustic. In retrospect\, that’s a good thing.” \nIndeed\, White’s interests after the accident shifted more toward the music of acoustic artists like Crosby\, Stills and Nash\, James Taylor\, and Joni Mitchell. Plugged or unplugged\, he had decided by his late teens that music was his calling\, and his first professional gig was at a holiday resort in England when he was 19 years old. \nBarely a year later\, he was invited to join Al Stewart’s band as a keyboardist for a tour of England\, Scotland\, and the U.S. in 1975. In addition to opening for artists like Linda Ronstadt\, Billy Joel and Queen\, White worked with Stewart in the studio in the making of Year of the Cat\, which became a huge hit for Stewart in 1976. The tour and the album marked the beginning of a twenty-year association with Stewart. In that time\, the two musicians co-wrote numerous songs\, including Stewart’s 1978 hit\, “Time Passages.” \nBy the beginning of the ‘80s\, White and Stewart had relocated to Los Angeles\, formed a band called Shot in the Dark\, and established a music publishing company called Lobster Music. Around the same time\, Danny White – he of the burning guitar incident several years earlier – formed a group called Matt Bianco\, which included a talented Polish singer named Basia Trzetrzelewska. Danny White and Basia splintered off to launch the singer’s solo career with the 1987 debut album\, Time and Tide\, which featured Peter White on guitar. \nAfter fifteen years as a backup musician and a session player\, White launched his solo recording career with the 1990 release of Reveillez-Vous (French for “Wake up\,” a title chosen by White in honor of his French mother). The album included several unused songs that White had written for Stewart\, and it became a favorite among contemporary jazz radio stations. \nHe followed with three records on the Sindrome label – Excusez-Moi (1991)\, Promenade (1993) and Reflections (1994) – before signing with Columbia for the 1996 release of Caravan of Dreams. He maintained an ambitious release schedule through the ‘90s and beyond\, but also found time to appear on recordings  by many of his friends\, including Dave Koz\, Rick Braun\, Richard Elliot\, Jeff Golub\, Lee Ritenour\, Kirk Whalum\, Boney James and many others. \nOn the road\, he has participated in numerous “Guitars and Saxes” tours with the aforementioned players\, and has established an annual “Peter White Christmas Tour” – the latter enterprise fueled by the success of his two highly regarded holiday albums\, Songs of the Season (1997) and A Peter White Christmas (2007). \nGood Day\, released in 2009 on Peak Records\, a division of Concord Music Group\, was White’s first collection of original songs in several years. “I just started going through my backlog of material – songs that I’d never finished\, some going as far back as ten or fifteen years – and I discovered that I had a lot of gems that I really wanted to show to the world\,” he says. “I wanted to record them in my own time and in my own way\, without any outside influence or interference.” \nWhite released Here We Go in 2012 on Heads Up International\, a division of Concord Music Group. The 11-song set\, produced by White and DC (George Benson\, Larry Carlton\, Bob James\, Patty Austin)\, featured several high-profile guest musicians\, including saxophonists David Sanborn and Kirk Whalum\, and pianist Philippe Saisse\, and included a range of original material written in the recent and distant past. “I wanted variety\,” says White. “I wanted songs that moved me\, in the hopes that they’ll move the listener as well. I’m on a journey\, and I want to bring with me anyone who’s willing to follow.” \nSmile\, released on October 7\, 2014\, is the final CD in White’s trilogy of albums consisting entirely of his own material. Co-produced with DC\, the recording features ten tracks – some were written recently\, some White wrote along the way with close friends and some were from the vault. Special guests include Mindi Abair (vocals)\, Rick Braun (horns)\, Euge Groove (soprano sax) and Philippe Saisse (keyboards\, piano and orchestra programming). White’s daughter\, Charlotte\, plays violin on one song. \nIn a career that spans nearly four decades\, over a dozen solo recordings and countless performances\, White insists that it’s the faces in the crowd and the fans that keep the experience fresh. “I’ll play a live show\, and someone will come to me afterward and say\, ‘Oh\, I loved this CD\,’ or ‘This song helped me through a bad time\,’” he explains. “Or I get emails from people saying\, ‘Oh\, I love the way you covered one of my favorite songs on your record back in 1994.’ The idea that someone can write me an email and tell me about something I did on a record that was released fifteen years ago – you can’t buy that. That’s priceless. That’s what keeps me going – the idea that people out there really care about what I do\, the idea that I’ve made a difference for someone.”
