The Cultural Current is an independent publication covering the people, places and ideas shaping Richmond and the surrounding region.
We tell stories at the intersection of arts, culture, community, entertainment, food, business, history and public life. From the artists taking the stage and entrepreneurs building something new to the neighborhoods, institutions and decisions changing the region, we cover what’s happening—and why it matters.

Richmond has a culture all its own, but the story doesn’t stop at the city limits. The Cultural Current follows that pulse throughout Richmond, Henrico, Chesterfield and communities across Central Virginia, highlighting the people and experiences that give the region its identity.
Our coverage includes live music, visual and performing arts, festivals, food, comedy, community events, local businesses, education, history, sports and the issues affecting the communities we cover.
We are especially committed to telling stories from Black and historically underrepresented communities while covering the full cultural landscape of the region.

That can mean photographing a neighborhood festival, interviewing an artist before a performance, documenting a community tradition, introducing readers to a local business or examining a decision that could change life across the region.
We believe local journalism is strongest when it is present, curious and connected to the communities it covers.
